Academy Robert Bosch Fellowships
at Chatham House
Academy Robert Bosch Fellowships are designed
for potential leaders and practitioners from the
six countries of the Eastern Partnership and Russia
to spend nine months developing their skills and
knowledge and undertaking research at Chatham
House in London. The 2017 fellowship will run
from February to October 2017. The deadline
for applications is 31 May 2016.
About the fellowships
Chatham House, The Royal Institute of
International Affairs, is an independent
policy institute.
Chatham House is a listed building
which was home to three British Prime
Ministers: William Pitt the Elder (the Earl
of Chatham), Edward Stanley and William
Gladstone.
The House has also given its name
to the famous Chatham House Rule,
first established in 1927 and revised twice
since. The rule is used around the world
to ensure free and open debate.
The fellowships have three constituent elements. First, they offer
the opportunity to work on a research project of the fellow’s own
design, pertaining to any of the Eastern Partnership countries and/
or Russia, potentially leading to a peer-reviewed publication. Second,
fellows contribute to wider work within Chatham House’s Russia
and Eurasia Programme. Third, they will participate in the Academy’s
leadership programme.
Fostering independent thinking
through research
Fellows will have the opportunity to further develop their understanding
of, and approach to, the political, economic and social issues facing
the countries of the Eastern Partnership and/or Russia. This takes place
in the context of the unique and neutral venue of Chatham House in
London, designed to enable researchers to conduct and publish their
own independent research.
The Russia and Eurasia Programme
Academy Robert Bosch Fellows are based in Chatham House’s Russia
and Eurasia Programme. The programme brings together the best
thinking on the changing dynamics of the region and their implications
for the West and the wider world. Academy Fellows contribute to
the work of the programme through events, in particular the busy
meetings programme.
The Queen Elizabeth II Academy
and its fellows
The fellowships are part of Chatham House’s Queen Elizabeth II Academy
for Leadership in International Affairs, established in September 2013.
It brings together emerging leaders from around the world to explore
the toughest policy problems they, their region and the world are facing.
Over time, the Academy’s alumni will constitute an expanding cadre of
decision-makers capable of working together to find solutions to complex
policy problems.
Research themes
The parameters for the 2017 Academy Robert Bosch Fellowship have been
designed in broad terms to allow applicants to devise a project within one
or more of the seven areas below that appeals to their own research interests.
Internal dynamics
1. Prospects for economic growth, modernization and democratization
in the Eastern Partnership countries and/or Russia;
2. Regional elites and networks of power;
3. Societal changes, inter-ethnic relations and non-state actors.
External attitudes
4. The future of EU and NATO relations with the Eastern Partnership
countries and/or Russia;
5. Security and conflict resolution;
6. Prospects for intra-regional conflict or cooperation;
7. Russia and the shared neighbourhood with Europe.
