The geographical area is 21,081 sq km with about 1 million population. Mizoram possibly has the most difficult terrain, over 75% of the total geographical area being hilly with steep slopes separated by rivers flowing north to south direction. About 60% of the population depends on shifting cultivation for their livelihoods. About Mizoram University Mizoram University was established on 2nd July 2001 by the Mizoram University Act, 2000 which appeared in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary) on 25th April, 2000 as a Central University having His Excellency, the President of India as its Visitor. The jurisdiction of the Mizoram University extends to the whole of Mizoram, the erstwhile jurisdiction of Mizoram Campus of North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, which functioned till 1.7.2001. Initially, the University had 7 academic departments inherited from NEHU, but now has a total of 31 academic departments. At present, there are 27 under-graduate Colleges including 2 professional institutions affiliated to the University. The total roll-strength in these institutions is approximately 8279 students. About Aizawl Aizawl, the scenic capital of Mizoram, with its surrounding area and the rest of the state have been developed to meet the influx of domestic and foreign tourists. The largest city in the state, but still very remote. Aizawl is located at 3715 feet from the sea level, and is a religious and cultural center of the Mizos. Aizawl lies just north of Tropic of cancer. 0 Summer temperature varies from 21-30 C and winter 0 temperature varies from 10 – 21 C. How to Reach Aizawl Nearest airport is Lengpui, Aizawl. Aizawl is well connected to Kolkata, (1 hr) and Guwahati(1 hr ). Nearest railhead is Silchar which is in Assam (184 km away) From Guwahati, travel to Silchar by Barak Valley Express, Cachar Express or the Tripura Passenger. The journey takes about 19 hrs.NH - 54 connects Aizawl with the rest of the country through Silchar. Buses and taxis are available from Silchar to Aizawl ( 6-8 hrs ). Taxis are the chief mode of transport in the city and rates negotiable. Buses ply on route within the state.
