ADAMS SCHOLARSHIP HISTORY : The scholarship was established in 2001 by Sue & Tim Adams, both employed at the time with Administrative Information Management Systems at WIU and raising two children. Sue & Tim both attended Western (Sue, B.B. ’83, MBA ’89, Tim, M.S. in Computer Science ‘11), but met and married after they had graduated and had begun working. Sue was involved with the Marching and Concert Bands while in school and music is an integral part of their family’s life. The Adams family wishes to reward students who further their love of music throughout college while focused on academics. CANDIDATE CRITERIA 1. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage non-music majors to continue their interest in and affection for music by participating in a musical performance ensemble during their college career and hopefully after graduation. (*See below) 2. To be eligible for this award the student must be enrolled as a full-time student at Western Illinois University in any academic program (incoming or current student). 3. The recipient must be registered for and actively participate in any of the musical performance ensembles in the School of Music (both semesters). 4. Recipient must maintain an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better. 5. Financial need is a consideration. 6. Applicants must submit a one-page essay describing the role music plays in their life, and how music may be incorporated into their life after graduation. SELECTION PROCESS : The application and selection process will be coordinated through the University Scholarship Office (Sherman Hall 308). TERMS : (AMOUNT OF THE AW ARD ) The scholarship amount of $1000 will be awarded each academic year, payable in two installments of $500 for Fall Semester and $500 for Spring Semester, to the student’s account at Western Illinois University. APPLICATIONS : Applications will be available from the University Scholarship Office (Sherman Hall 308). Completed applications must be received in the University Scholarship Office by May 1. Large concert ensembles include Wind Ensemble, University Singers, and the Symphony Orchestra. Other specialty ensembles include the WIU Marching Leathernecks, Opera Theatre, and opportunities in Music Theatre. Our Jazz Studies program includes Jazz Studio Orchestra, Vocal Jazz Workshop, and a variety of other jazz ensembles.
