ACS).
OBSERVING DESCRIPTION
The goal of this program is to characterize the variation in CTE and
QE for the ACS/WFC and ACS/HRC CCDs when operated at temperatures
colder and warmer than the current operational temperature. The range
of temperature tested here should represent the coldest and warmest
temperature at which the CCD can be operated after SM4 in the case the
ASCS is installed or not installed (or installed and not connected to
ACS).
The temperature (Celsius Degree) for the test will be:
WFC -77 (current), -74, -80
HRC -80 (current), -76, -85
In order to minimize the additional heat load on the interface plate and enclosure radiator
the two temperature should be inverted, so when we test WFC warm the HRC should be at
the coldest temperature and viceversa. In order to have a direct comparison we also take
images at the normal temperature.
So there will be three sets of visits, one for each temperature. The structure of each set
is the same.
VISITS IDs:
LETTER+NUMBER
A,B,C identify different temperature
4
Proposal 10771 - Overview
1,2.. identify different visits at the same temp
VISIT 1,2,3, and 4 are a mix of EXTERNAL and INTERNAL OBSERVATIONS.
VISIT 1,2: WFC CTE AND QE
Observation of a field of 47 TUC
For CTE purposes three different pointings are required
(POS1, POS2, POS3). The comparison of POS1 and POS2 will
allow to calculate the serial CTE (quadrant A&C),
the comparison of POS1 and POS3 the parallel CTE (quadrants C&D).
This part of the test will be conducted using F606W and a combination
of short and long exposure.
For the QE measurement, POS 1 will be imaged in three filters
(F435W, F606W and F814W). Two images per filter to allow cosmic
ray rejection.
INTERNAL: 1 bias and 1 dark for HRC and WFC respectively
Note: the WFC dark is 800 sec long, the HRC dark (in parallel)
is 753sec long.
VISIT 3: HRC CTE and QE (1 orbit)
similar as visit 1. The CTE test is done reading the chip from
different amplifiers. No change in position is required. The
QE test is done at F330W, F606W, and F814W.
5
Proposal 10771 - Overview
INTERNAL:WFC EPER BIAS + F435W EPER (1750e-)
VISIT 4: WFC : CTE impact on detection threshold
We repeat a 4 point dithered observation of one of the GOODS field
in F850LP. The image will be used (after subtraction of a previous
epoch) to define the detection limit in regions of the sky far and
close from the readout amplifier to investigate the impact of CTE
in the detection threshold.
INTERNAL:WFC F850LP EPER (6700e-) +F814W EPER (10800e-)
VISIT 5 ONLY INTERNAL:1 bias and 1 dark for HRC and WFC respectively
Note: the WFC dark is 800 sec long, the HRC dark (in parallel)
is 753sec long.
In principle it could be inserted before the first visits, just after the
temperature set point.
VISIT 6 ONLY INTERNAL
HRC EPER BIAS + EPER(F330W(100e-), F555W(1660e-), F814W (6500e-), F850LP(4023e-))
it takes only 10 minutes and it could be squized in before between visit3 and visit4
(the internal lamp is on after visit 3)
6
Proposal 10771 - Overview
The order of the visits does not matter, as long as all visits at the same temperature are executed

Comments: Set the WFC TEC setpoint temperature to the default value (currently -77.0 degC), which is used as a contingency in the event that the cold WFC temperature is not achieved. The setpoint commanding wil
l be skipped if the Event Flag 8 is SET, which must occur via real-time commanding when the WFC TEC setpoint from visit AT is achieved. The Event Flag 8 will be cleared at the end of the Visit. NOTE: A link is req
uired prior to the start of this exposure and after the cold setpoint may be achieved.

Diagnostic Status: No Diagnostics
Scientific Instruments: ACS/WFC
Special Requirements: ORIENT 315.0D TO 315.0 D
Comments: As Adam request, in order to facilitate the subtraction of the targets using a
previous epoch, the orient should be a multiple of 45 degrees.
The window of visibility that matchs with 47 tuc is Nov25-Dec03.
For the entire period orient=315 is available.
