Cromer Ridge Watershed Restoration
Soil & Water Programs FY2006 - 2012 Accomplishments
Daniel Boone National Forest, Southern Region
State: Kentucky
Forest Service Contribution: $20,000
Congressional District: 5th
Partner Contribution: $582,000
Accomplishments:
Project Costs: $602,000
Between 2006 & 2012 we accomplished over 160 acres of
Soil & Water (s&w-rsrc-imp) partnership acres. Numerous
other noxious weed and wildlife targets were also met.
External Partners:
KY Division of Water, KY Dept. Fish & Wildlife Resources,
US EPA, Nature Conservancy, Kentucky Division of
Conservation, and local landowners.
Internal Partners:
Soil &Water, Engineering, Wildlife, Recreation, Heritage.
The Daniel Boone National Forest and adjacent private
lands had been severely impacted by the illegal use of offhighway vehicles (OHVs). This illegal use of OHVs resulted
in erosion and landscape degradation in the Cromer Ridge
Watershed. Erosion control best management practices
(BMPs) installed have resulted in restored vegetation and
ground cover, and significantly reduced sediment loads to
the Rockcastle River (proposed Wild & Scenic River; T&E
habitat) and Woods Creek Reservoir (drinking water
source).
The project was funded by $582,000 in US Environmental
Protection Agency Section 319 funding through the
Kentucky Division of Water. State match of $390,000 was
provided by water quality improvement activities funded
by the Division of Conservation and the Kentucky
Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR).
Nearly 40 miles of illegal OHV trails were closed and
another six miles of road was improved. Vegetation was
planted on 395 acres, reducing stream sedimentation by
5,502 tons/year.
Eroding 4-wheeler area before restoration.
Same area after restoration.
