It will probably be useful to download the document Useful Baseball Info from the website
http://www.uccs.edu/pipes/educator-programs/sky-sox-math-day.html in order to give you
some important information which will help you answer these questions.
1) The place where a batter stands while batting is called the "Batter's Box". There are two
batter's boxes on the field, one for right handed hitters, the other for left handed hitters. Each
batter's box is a rectangle, 4 feet by 6 feet. Before the game the grounds crew lines both of the
batter's boxes with chalk. How much chalk is required to complete the job?
2) While we're on the subject of chalk … The place where a batter stands and warms up prior
to his turn to bat is called the "On Deck Circle". There are two on deck circles on the field, one
for each team. Each on deck circle is 6 feet in diameter. The grounds crew outlines each of the
on deck circles with chalk before the game. How many feet of chalk is needed to outline both of
the on deck circles?
3) Last season my favorite Sky Sox pitcher gave up 80 earned runs in 160 innings pitched.
What was his Earned Run Average last season?
4) Total attendance at Sky Sox home games in 2012 was 334,245. The Sky Sox played 68
home dates in 2012. What was the average attendance per date at Sky Sox home games in 2012?
5) The players on the 2013 25-man Major League roster of the Los Angeles Dodgers average 9
million dollars per year in salary. If the entire payroll of the 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers was
used to buy hot dogs at Security Service Field on a Two Buck Tuesday, how many Dogs could
the Dodgers buy?
6) The Sky Sox will play 25 games in the month of May (including two Math Youth Days!).
The Sky Sox use an average of 20 baseballs per game. If a case of baseballs contains 24 balls,
how many cases of baseballs will the Sky Sox need to buy from their baseball supplier in order
to have enough baseballs to use in May?
7) While we're on the subject of baseballs … 88 inches of red thread stitching is required to
produce each baseball. Major League Baseball estimates it will use 600,000 baseballs in 2013.
How many miles of stitching will that require?
8) Suppose that after the first 18 games of this season, Sky Sox pitcher Josh Outman has struck
out 24 batters. If he maintains this pace for the entire season, how many batters will Outman
have struck out by the end of the Sky Sox’ 2013 season?
9) If Drew Pomeranz pitches 180 innings this season, and his Earned Run Average this season
is 3.50, how many Earned Runs will he have allowed this season?
10) Charlie Blackmon is the runner at first base while Matt McBride is at bat. On five
consecutive pitches, Blackmon tries to steal second. But on each pitch, McBride hits the ball
foul. On each of these five pitches, Blackmon runs 3/5ths of the way to second base, then runs
back to first. How far does Blackmon run while McBride is fouling off pitches?
