Shrub Ecology and
Management to
Promote Integrated
Vegetation
Management on
Powerline Corridors
Shrubs and associated old-field plant
communities are valued for their beauty, wildlife
habitat, and berry picking, among other benefits.
Shrubs are practically important for site
stabilization after disturbance, and for long-term
community stability for such land uses as rightsof-way.
Contemporary research on shrub ecology
and management will be shared using an
innovative process-level framework for
Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM).
Electric transmission line rights-of-way will be
featured, but the principles and practices of IVM
will be developed to be more broadly applicable
to other systems.
Participants will learn:
(1) identification of over 50 species of shrubs*
(2) conservation techniques for shrub
communities
(3) how to approach related vegetation
management issues and opportunities.
* All participants will receive an advanced
copy of “Shrubs and short trees of the
Northeast” by Whittier, Ballard, and Nowak,
SUNY-ESF.
Intended Audience: Vegetation Managers,
Regulators, and Landowners
September 25-26, 2003
Heiberg Forest
Tully, NY

Instructors: Dr. Chris Nowak and Ben Ballard,
SUNY-ESF Associate Professor and Research
Scientist, respectively, will jointly lead the
workshop. Dr. Nowak has been a principle
researcher in Integrated Vegetation
Management and rights-of-way for nearly 15
years. Mr. Ballard has been working with basic
and applied aspects of shrub ecology and
management for the past five years. Their
research program in IVM and shrubs has grown
to over 20 contemporary studies, many of
which form the foundation for this workshop.
