Green Energy Cooperative: Concept
is to convert waste oil to biofuel.
Expanding Production:
- Engineering students design
- Science and business students
provide energy analysis and
the business plan.

New “zero net energy” showcase building for campus. Design includes:
PV, solar thermal, green roof, passive solar, rain gardens and biomass
combined heat and power system. The biomass CHP system will
provide 63% of the heat and 19% of the electricity needs for the
campus. We project it will save 54 TBTU of fossil fuel each year.

Endurance Wind Turbine
Wind Turbine Power
P = 0.5 x rho x A x Cp x V3 x Ng x Nb
  where:
P = power in watts (746 watts = 1 hp)
rho = air density (1.225 kg/m3 at sea level, less higher)
A = rotor swept area, exposed to the wind (m2)
Cp = Coefficient of performance (.59 {Betz limit} is the
maximum theoretically possible, .35 for a good design)
V = wind speed in meters/sec (20 mph = 9 m/s)
Ng = generator efficiency (50% for car alternator, 80%
or possibly more for a permanent magnet generator or
grid-connected induction generator)
Nb = gearbox/bearings efficiency (depends, could be as
high as 95% if good)

Itemized System Costs:
1) Endurance S-250 wind turbine with controller and 126’ tilt tower
$32,500.00
Total installed pre-incentive cost (no sales tax due to tax exempt status)
$46,950.00
Less cost of excavation and misc. labor provided by school
(-) $ 1,975.00
Less the NYSERDA rebate of $25,732.00 (wind added to curriculum)
(-) $25,732.00
The net “turnkey” system cost after the NYSERDA incentive is:
$19,243.00
Projected Energy Production:
Using the NY Wind Resource Explorer and GPS coordinates obtained on
site, this site appears to have an average annual wind speed of 5.5 meters
per second (12.3 mph) at 37 meters. Using this wind speed, the
Endurance energy production chart shows an annual energy production of
8,100 kwh. A loss factor of 15% is applied, which results in an estimated
6885 kwh. An uncertainty factor of +/– 7% is then applied, resulting in an
energy production range between 6403 kwh and 6885.
