T
he architectural firm of Hord
Coplan Macht has designed
a three-story, state-of-theart facility that will unite HCC’s
academic and continuing education
health care programming in one
building. Designed throughout with
high-tech classrooms, laboratories,
modeling and simulation labs, and
informal study and social spaces,
the new Darlington Hall will be
prominently located on HCC’s
campus.
The design is a reflection of a
new, more collaborative, teambased model of teaching in the
health care fields. “For us it was
a great opportunity to think about
an educational building that had
a different kind of logic and that
takes advantage of both vertical and
horizontal spaces and natural light,”
said the lead architect at Hord Coplan
Macht. The design incorporates
2,200 square feet of highly flexible
space with multipurpose classrooms,
several event areas, student lounges,
cafés, and outdoor spaces —
including a second-floor outdoor
classroom and a terrace set on
Harford’s historic campus.
will also serve Upper Chesapeake
Health through ongoing professional
development coursework.
Construction began in 2013 and will
continue for approximately one year.
Through capital support from the
state and county, Harford Community
College has provided construction
and design jobs in northeastern
Maryland for more than a decade.
This important capital project will
continue to provide family-sustaining
jobs for many residents of Harford
County.
The building, which will be located
between the Chesapeake Center and
Edgewood Hall on Thomas Run
Road, will be the central hub for
students pursuing nursing and allied
health degrees and certificates at
Harford Community College, and
