Mathematics in Education and Industry Introduction to Statistics A one-day course for teachers who have little or no experience of teaching Statistics Hosted by various academic venues around the country 09:30 – 16:00 This course will provide participants with an overview of the topics that come up in the S1 modules across all specifications - AQA, Edexcel, OCR and OCR(MEI) - along with a range of effective teaching and learning resources. Participants receive 12 months' access to the MEI Integral online resources for Statistics and ongoing email support from the presenter. No previous knowledge of S1 is expected. The course aims: To strengthen teachers' understanding of some common topics in Statistics 1 modules and introduce teaching ideas for all S1 specifications To show how ICT can be used to illustrate statistical ideas and improve students’ understanding To introduce two commonly used distributions: Binomial and Normal To provide a basis of understanding for teachers to build on individually through follow up remote learning sessions and web resources. MEI is a registered charity, number 1058911 Follow-up: The one day course will be followed by four evening sessions in an online classroom so that all topics from the various S1 modules are covered. The topics covered are: Discrete Random Variables (Edexcel, MEI, OCR) Hypothesis testing using the Binomial distribution (MEI) Estimation and confidence intervals (AQA) Correlation and Regression (AQA, Edexcel and OCR) Permutations and Combinations (OCR) Geometric Distribution (OCR) Timetable for the day: 09:30 Arrival, registration and coffee 10:00 Probability (including conditional probability and Venn diagrams) Sometimes probability can be very intuitive and sometimes it’s the opposite; we will look at both and how to make sense of it all 11:15 Tea and coffee break 11:30 Measuring Variation Different ways of measuring variation and how to spot outliers. 12:30 Lunch (provided) 13:15 Binomial and Geometric Distributions Gamblers played a big role in the development of probability theory; we will start from dice throwing to develop two models that have more general application 14:45 Tea and coffee break 15:00 Normal distribution and use of tables What is the normal distribution, when does it occur and how do you work with it? 16:00 Close Fees: The cost of this course is £200. This fee includes the one-day course, one year's access to web resources and a series of four optional on-line lessons. Current MEI Members qualify for a 5% discount on this fee.
