Introduction

- Two student pharmacists from Ohio Northern University

(ONU) developed and implemented an IRB approved asthma screening and education program for an employee wellness clinic.

ONU HealthWise

is a multidisciplinary health and wellness clinic located on the campus of ONU that offers medication therapy management, disease state management, preventive health screening, nutrition counseling, and physical wellness coaching to university employees and their families. After four years of operation, ONU

HealthWise has shown improved clinical outcomes and economic savings.

Setting

The asthma screening and educational program was added as part of the Preventive Medicine arm of ONU HealthWise, and is the first targeted preventive medicine screening at the

University focused on asthma.

Objective

To determine the need for an asthma management clinic through identifying poor respiratory control in patients by utilizing a pharmacist directed asthma screening and educational program, thus expanding the university employee wellness clinic in order to provide a means for university employees and their families to improve their overall health.

Provides a unique learning setting for student pharmacists by:

- Utilize respiratory screenings, patient education, and data collection/analysis

- Expand role of pharmacy in direct patient care

- Develop a collaborative practice model by building a patient population
