Microsoft Technology Centers (MTC) provide everything enterprise customers
need–a technology-rich environment and industry expertise–to envision, plan,
build, deploy, operate and optimize customized solutions based on Microsoft
and partner technologies.
At every MTC around the world, customers are provided with access to a wide
array of technologies supplied by members of the MTC Alliances program. These
technologies are often utilized in the execution of Proof of Concept (PoC) work.
While undertaking PoCs, customers and MTC staff members need fast and
secure access to the various servers, storage and network equipment being
used, so that they can monitor, reconfigure and manage the many assets in use.
The MTC in Bangalore, co-located with Microsoft India, boasts a comprehensive
infrastructure providing enterprise customers with demonstrations, proof of
concept engagements and test environments. As its networks are physically
separate from the business networks of Microsoft India and the MTC employs
only one system administrator managing the data, the MTC requires an
advanced, out-of-band, total solution for comprehensive management of the
data center. Effective, safe, unified management and monitoring improves
efficiency in IT operations and increases IT service levels.
A comprehensive data center operational management solution, as a part of
the MTC Banglaore data center, would help to showcase Microsoft’s data center
operational management model to regional enterprise customers.

Solutions
After considering the unique customer demands of this MTC location, Avocent
provided a complete out-of-band data center management solution to the
Bangalore team. The solution applied the most advanced Avocent data
center operational management methods to the equipment in an advanced
and complex data center, sharing its concept and core spirit for data center
operational management to the whole industry.
Specifically, since the MTC data center network is separate from the office
network and a large number of service processors are deployed, the Avocent
management solution utilizes DSView 3 management software as its core and
IT infrastructure management hardware as its extension, in order to establish an
integrated out-of-band data center management platform.

Through the connection channel provided by this management
platform, Microsoft system administrators are allowed secure access
to perform quick maintenance and management operations on the
servers. Additionally, the service processor integration capability
included in this solution provides the Microsoft system administrator
with a safer, more stable and easy-to-operate maintenance
environment.
Results
Meanwhile, through Avocent hardware appliances, the administrator
can take advantage of the service processor support provided by
the Avocent solution. This enables a centralized method to directly
use the remote management functions provided by these service
processors in DSView 3 software. Performing server underlying
configuration operations and reacting to system failures in the
servers in a timely manner bring downtime to a minimum and
improve server availability.
The Avocent solution has been operating successfully within the
MTC. With continued technical innovation from Avocent, the scale of
application for the solution is expanding.
With the integration of Avocent and Microsoft data center IT
infrastructure optimization solutions, the MTC is capable of
presenting Microsoft’s advanced solutions and concepts on
important subjects such as data center network planning,
construction and management to enterprise customers. With the
solution from Avocent, data center administrators in the MTC can
perform all day-to-day server maintenance tasks in a common,
management interface with the DSView 3 management software,
greatly improving production efficiency of the administrator.
IT equipment within the data center includes servers, network
devices, service processors and power supply equipment. These
assets are no longer disparate management units, as DSView 3
software unifies the assets into a stable, secure and easy-to-use
management system. As a bonus, previously isolated tasks for server
maintenance are now centralized.
