Teacher Career Development
This month we are focussing on the issue of teacher career development.
Career development can take many forms, including mentoring trainee teachers or
NQTs, studying for a qualification, participating in some professional development,
or teaching a new course or Key Stage. Additionally, it can be joining a professional
body for mathematics teachers, interacting with some of the excellent bloggers and
‘Tweeters’ who write about mathematics education, engaging with local teacher
networks, teaching in a different school, or gaining a promotion.
Professional development is an important aspect of career development as it
enables teachers to develop new skills or subject knowledge, network with teachers
from other schools, and engage with different teaching approaches. Above all,
effective professional development is fundamental to the process of enhancing the
experience of students.
In order to maximise the impact of any professional development, teachers and
departmental leaders need to be strategic about how they approach the issue. We
suggest that a good starting point would be to ask yourself or your colleagues,
‘Where do you see your career in 3 years’ time?’ This could form part of a
discussion in an annual review or even a departmental meeting, if appropriate. The
response(s) to this question should inform the professional development that is
undertaken next.
