It’shardtobelievethatwe’llseestudentsonourmaincampusinjustafewshortweeks!Even
thoughsummerwillsoonfade,Ilookforwardtothestartofanewacademicyear.
WhatfollowsisthenextinstallmentoftherouEnebulleEnwe'velaunchedtokeepyoubeGer
informedofadministraEveacEviEesandiniEaEves.
IcameawayfromrecenttoursofournorthernproperEes—fromClaytontoWanakena,and
NewcombtoWarrensburg(menEonedbelow)—withagreatersenseoftheirincredible
opportuniEesforeducaEon,research,andoutreach.Weneedtoassesscurrentusestoassure
wearerealizingthegreatestbenefitsandimpactpossible,thinkaboutenhancedbenefitstoour
studentsoftheseresources,andaskhowtheESFproperEesinaggregatecanfuncEonasmore
thansumofthepartsasanetwork.
AsImenEonedwiththefirstinstallmentofthisbulleEn,itisnotintendedtocaptureeverything
thatishappening,noraretheitemslistedexploredindetail.Theaimistobebrief,but
informaEve,andthisisonlyoneofanumberofcommunicaEontoolsthatweareusingtoinform
theESFcommunityofacEviEesfocusedonmovingtheCollegeforward.Pleasedonothesitateto

StrategicPlanning:
Unitleadersheldaverysuccessfulannualadministra)veretreatonJuly30.Thepurpose
wastothinktogetherabouthowtoworkacrossunitsandtowardthreeimmediate
insEtuEonalneeds:1)increasingrevenue,2)improvingcosteffec5veness,and3)
dis5nguishingESFandbringingittogreaterna5onalvisibility.Peopleworkedinsmalland
largegroupsthroughoutthedaytoidenEfyandbegintoarEculategoalsandhighpriority
effortsthatwouldbebestservedbyintegratedteams(groupsfrommulEpleadministraEve
units).Bytheendoftheday,threeareascameforwardforconEnueddialogue:1)
exploringaddi5onalauxiliaryserviceopportuni5es,suchas,butnotlimitedtothe
potenEalforadiningfacilityandnewresidencehall;2)strategicandenhancedu5liza5on
ofESF’sproper5esinCentralNY,theThousandIslands,andtheAdirondacks—andthis
includesaddressingbuildingandfacilityneedsinalllocaEons—andarenewedfocuson
fieldprograms(suchasdevelopmentofanenvironmentalobservaEonnetwork);and,3)
developinganESF“OpenAcademy,”whichincludesnumerousfreeandcredit-bearing
onlineofferingstargeEngmulEpleaudiences.

ItisplannedthatadraCofthestrategicplanwillbereleasedforreviewandcommentthe
secondweekofthefallsemester,andthattherecommendedadministraEvefocusareas

previousyearofstrategicplanningbytheESFcommunity,willbeincorporatedintothe
dra\planasappropriate.
Anextstepoverthecomingweeksistoinvolveacademicleadershipandotherfaculty
andstaffindiscussionsaroundthethreeareasfromtheadministraEveretreat,aswellas
withotherelementsofthestrategicplan.
BudgetandFinances:
AteamledbythePresident,includingfaculty,administraEon,staff,andastudent
representaEve,touredESF’sAdirondackproper)esthefirstweekofAugust.Oneintentof
thetripwastofocusonelevaEngstrategicopportuniEesfortheproperEesandtheCollege
asawhole.ThegrouptouredPackForestintheeasternAdirondacks;the
AdirondackEcologicalCenter,AdirondackInterpreEveCenter,HunEngtonForest,andthe
MastenHouseintheNewcombareaofthecentralAdirondacks;andtheRangerSchool,
DubuarForest,andCranberryLakeBiologicalStaEonintheWanakenaregionofthe
northwesternAdirondacks.TheteammetwithnumerousESFfaculty,researchers,staff,
andstudents,aswellasRangerSchoolalumni,studentsfromotherschoolsdoingresearch
atourfaciliEes,andpeoplevisiEngourproperEes.Thattrip,andavisittotheThousand
IslandsBiologicalStaEoninClaytontwoweeksearlier,providedarenewedanddeep
appreciaEonfortheseveryuniqueassets,whichincludenotonlytheproperEes,faciliEes,
andassociatedprogramsandresearch,butalsothegreatESFpeopleassociatedwitheach!
CollegeleadershipconEnuestobeheavilyengagedwithSUNYregardingthedevelopment
ofopEonsandopportuniEesrelatedtofiscalaffairs.Forinstance,allSUNYunitsare
requiredtoreportbytheendofSeptemberon18metricsassociatedwiththeir
contribuEonstoSUNYExcels—theSUNYsystemstrategicplan.BobFrenchisleadingthe
efforttoputtogetherour"PerformanceImprovementPlan"asSUNYhaslabeledthis
effort.
Relatedtothelastpoint,wewillalsosubmitatwo-page“whitepaper”outliningour
requestforcompe))vefundingfromSUNYtoassistinreachinggoalsassociatedwith
bothourstrategicplanningeffortandtheSUNYExcelssystemeffort.

The2015-2016AmendmenttotheAccessoryInstruc)onandStudentServicesContract
finalizedbybothESFandSyracuseUniversitysEllawaitsfinalreviewbytheNYSAGorney
General’sOffice.TherewillbenochangeininstrucEonalorstudentrelatedservices.
ESFleadershipconEnuestalkingwithSUaboutanumberofcollabora)ve
student,programma)c,andresearchopportuni)es.
AcademicGovernanceandCollegeLeadership:

AcademicGovernancehasagreedtoconveneasmallgrouptodeveloptwolistsofneeded

spacerenova)onsasprioriEzedbyfaculty,oneforclassroomsandanotherforteaching
labs.Specifically,thisgroupwilldevelopthecriteriabywhichthisisdetermined,definea

prioritylisttobedeliveredtotheProvost’sOffice.Thelistswillthenbesharedwith
PhysicalPlantasinputtothedecisionsforrenovaEons.Itisimportanttonotethatfunding

fundedinthe7thAnnualExploraEonsinDiversityandAcademicExcellenceIniEaEve.“The
purposeofthis‘SafeZone’projectistoimprovetheESFandUpstatecampus
environmentsbyprovidingaprofessionaldevelopmentopportunityforarepresentaEve
cohortfromeachcampustoarEculatetheirownstereotypesandassumpEons,idenEfy
others’stereotypesandassumpEon,andlearnpracEcalskillsthatwillenablethemto

TheOnondagaLakeResearchCenterprogramplansarealsowellunderwayasweworkto
refineprogrammingandresearchopportuniEes,anddevelopabusinessplantocoverthe
operaEonalcostsofthebuilding.
TheESF/SEO“BranchingOut”SummerCampbeganonAugust9andconEnuesthrough
August14.Thisprogrambrings20highschooljuniorsfromNewYorkCitytothemain
campusforaresidenEalexperienceandfieldacEviEesaimedatinteracEonswiththe
naturalworld.ProgrammingisprovidedthroughESFOutreach.Thestudentscomefrom
underrepresentedgroups,andtheyareaffiliatedwithaNYCnonprofitorganizaEon
SponsorsforEducaEonOpportunity.SEOstaffhelptopreparethestudentsforadmission
tocompeEEvecolleges,anditisanorganizaEonthatESFhaspartneredwithforseveral
years.
