ESF in the News
It's hard to believe we are
coming up on Thanksgiving
and preparing for finals. As the
semester flies by, we are
making progress on one of our
biggest projects - the
Academic Research Building
(ARB). We are also working on
new initiatives, such as a SUNY 2020 award we
received, a pending SUNY proposal for an
additional $4 million in IT infrastructure, and
exploring partnerships with organizations as
diverse as the Haudenosaunee, Smithsonian,
Terrapin Bright Green, and the Theodore
Roosevelt Association.
We take time this month to recognize that it is
Native American Heritage Month. We are
fortunate that our home resides among the
Haudenosaunee peoples, our friends and
partners.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
ESF recognizes Native American
For more than a decade, Paul
Haczela has been donating
animal specimens to ESF's
Roosevelt Wild Life Collection.
"I've been hunting all around the
world and I got the idea that I
should be donating these animals
rather than just looking at them,"
said Haczela, an avid hunter and
1957 graduate of Syracuse
University.

ESF will establish a biomimicry
laboratory in the heart of the
Adirondacks so faculty, visiting
scientists and students can
devise nature-inspired solutions
for sustainability challenges.

ESF, working with the
Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) in
partnership with local
government and the Adirondack
Park Agency (APA) will hold a
series of public meetings in
Adirondack communities to
gather public input on a
preliminary draft regional
strategy to diversify and enhance
outdoor recreation opportunities

Heritage Month
With the
assistance of
Dr. Robin
Kimmerer and
Neil Patterson
of ESF's Center
for Native
Peoples and the Environment, President Wheeler
recently sent a letter to the Onondaga Nation
acknowledging the Nation's environmental
leadership and affirming the College's
dedication to intellectual pluralism. Events are
planned on campus next week to observe Native
American Heritage Month.

Funding secured
for new campus energy manager
The New York Power Authority will fund the
establishment of a new position for a campus

Green in the works
President Wheeler recently met with the NYCbased firm Terrapin Bright Green and agreed on
new opportunities for collaboration and student

New opportunities emerge with
the Smithsonian Institution
President Wheeler was recently invited to deliver
a lecture in Washington, D.C., on "The Science of
Taxonomy and Art of Survival" to the National
Museum of Natural History's Senate of
Scientists, 15 of the museum's board of
Scientists, 15 of the museum's board of

Campus leadership networks with
SUNY colleagues
Members of the ESF leadership team have met
with Chancellor Zimpher and attended the SUNY
ACT Conference, SUNY Board of Trustees

Board chair meets with incoming DEC
commissioner
Vita DeMarchi, chair of the ESF Board of
Trustees, recently met with incoming DEC
Commissioner Basil Seggos to discuss
enhancing the long-standing relationship
between the College and DEC.
