The Foundation
The Nuffield Foundation is an endowed charitable trust, established in 1943 by William Morris (Lord
Nuffield), the motor car manufacturer. With assets of some £200m and annual expenditure of £10m, it is one of the larger UK foundations.
Its fundamental mission, as set out in the trust deed, is “the advancement of social well being, particularly by scientific research…” The Foundation works mainly in the following fields: children and families; education; law and law reform; poverty and disadvantage; science education; and science and social science research capacity. Much of its work involves supporting research that will lead to improvements in policy and practice, or taking other initiatives to ensure that rigorous evidence is brought to bear on wider policy discussions.
The Nuffield Foundation’s education work
Nuffield has supported innovative research and development in education for over 50 years. We support a range of different kinds of activities in these areas: research, intervention studies, development projects, reviews, seminars, capacity building and practical work. The education work includes the Curriculum
Programme. This post bridges the Foundation’s research and development work, and will be based within the Curriculum Programme.
Mathematics education is an important and growing area of the Foundation’s work. The role of the
Mathematics Project Head will involve three main areas: leading on curriculum development; contributing strategically to the Foundation’s work in research policy and practice; and promoting Nuffield’s interest on mathematics within the mathematics education community.
The Curriculum Programme undertakes a range of projects and activities centring on the development of the curriculum 5-19. The particular areas of interest for the programme are secondary science and mathematics education, although historically projects have covered a wider range of school subjects.
Projects may be run entirely in-house, but usually involve one or more partners in development and dissemination.
The Curriculum Programme’s core staff members are the Director, a Project Manager, an Editor, a CPD coordinator and Senior Administrator. Each of the projects which make up the programme’s substantive work is led by a project head, recruited to the specific project on a fixed-term basis. The project heads in turn co-ordinate external networks, consultants and teams of teachers who have the appropriate expertise to work on the various projects. Each project has access to supporting core staff with expertise in project management, administration, editing and design.
Detailed information on the Curriculum Programme and its projects is available via the website, www.nuffieldcurriculumcentre.org
which now functions as a major source of dissemination and communication for the programme and its individual projects. Please note that the Foundation is currently re-branding, and is in the process of developing a new set of websites which will reflect the Curriculum
Programme’s new name and role within the Foundations’ education work.
We currently have projects redeveloping the Graded assessment in mathematics materials, and exploring the role of Use of Mathematics and its assessment at post-16. Past work in mathematics includes primary and secondary mathematics projects. More recently, we have produced resources to support the Free
Standing Mathematics Qualifications and Use of Mathematics A level. Future work is likely to explore potential for innovations in the mathematics curriculum.
Two reports were commissioned for publication in 2009, to inform our future work in mathematics education. The first report is by a team at Oxford University, looking into what is known about the way children learn mathematics. (See http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/go/grants/education/page_683.html
).
The second, in its final stages of completion by a team at King’s College London, is an international comparative study of mathematics education.
The Foundation has a strong interest in the mathematics education of school and undergraduate students taking courses with a need for quantitative methods, including the social and biological sciences. We are working with ESRC on a specific project to improve quantitative methods training in social science undergraduates. We are also working with ACME on an inquiry into the mathematical needs of school leavers.
