Motivating learners - calculus
Why do we need to motivate learners to learn
calculus? Why can’t they just do it?
Integrating Calculus
Imagine you are second year students who are confident of
getting an A grade in your A level mathematics.......
Integrating Calculus
Focussing on.....
A connected approach to teaching and learning
calculus for A level.
Integrating Calculus
I imagined I was a first year student that had come in to the
class with a grade c in mathematics and I wrote down
everything I knew about calculus....
Work in pairs: Make a poster showing everything you
know about calculus.
You can use formulas, diagrams, words, anything you
like...Doesn’t have to be neat.....

Making connections
All continuous functions are
differentiable – discuss.
Making connections
We can make connections between
definite integration and the trapezium
and mid-ordinate rules......
Making connections
Why do we integrate to find
areas “under” graphs”?
Making connections
We can make connections between
definite integration and the trapezium
and mid-ordinate rules......and also
with solids of revolution.
Many-step problems
One small change.....
Find and describe the stationary
points of
y  x 3  4 x 2  5 x  11
Thinking about the ideas and strategies you have
discussed in this session, what are you going to do
when you go back to your organisation?
