Power Generation and Distribution (Offshore)
R&D Highlight:
The Subsea Power Grid –
A Virtual Tour
Improving offshore economics through
enhanced subsea power distribution
Operators leave significant amounts of pay
behind in offshore environments, despite the
elevated costs and risks associated with drilling
5,000 to 7,000 meters into the earth – beyond
the 2,000 to 3,000 meters between the ocean
floor and the surface.
Subsea processing facilities are critical to
boosting recovery. They consist of multiple
components, including pumps and compressors,
all of which require power. Currently, however,
there are limited means to transmit power
underwater over long distances. Typically today,
single power feeders are run from topside
facilities, to each specific consumer on the sea
floor. These solutions add complexity and cost
to operations; in addition, they are simply not
viable options for long step-outs, or for situations that require relatively high power output
or a high number of power consumers.
Already a premier provider of subsea solutions
to the oil and gas industry, Siemens is in the
advanced stages of developing a Subsea Power
Grid, designed to optimize distribution of power
to subsea processing equipment, which in turn
play an increasingly critical role in boosting
production in deepwater environments. The
groundbreaking technology represents a radical
departure from more conventional approaches
to subsea power distribution, such as running
single power feeders from land or placing
power equipment on floating facilities. It holds
the potential to make previously unrecoverable
hydrocarbon resources recoverable.
This ‘virtual reality’ presentation will focus
on the challenges inherent in supplying subsea
components with power. It will also touch
on the critical role connectors and associated
expertise play in subsea power supply and
finally, the objectives and progress to date
of the Subsea Power Grid project.

Setting the Industry Standard
in Subsea Connectors –
The SpecTRON10
Ensuring reliable power distribution
in subsea environments with a cutting-edge
connector system
Our wet-mateable, medium- and high-power
SpecTRON subsea electrical connector systems
have earned a field-proven reputation for
reliability. Building on more than 30 years of
experience, the SpecTRON10 system integrates
a cutting-edge design with state-of-the-art
testing to maximize reliability – where reliability
is absolutely paramount.
Our SpecTRON10 connectors are pressure-
balanced: the pressure acting on the seals is the
same inside and outside, thereby preventing
water penetration. They are also designed and
manufactured to be free from partial discharge,
which could lead to progressive deterioration
and ultimately, electrical failure.
To learn more about what makes our
SpecTRON10 system so reliable, and why
connector reliability is so mission critical
in subsea environments, please join us at

Gas Turbine Fuel Flexibility
Secure, clean energy
for offshore operations
Gas turbines play a critical role in meeting the
industry’s demand for a reliable power source
on offshore operations. Dry Low Emission (DLE)
combustion systems help address one of the
challenges associated with power generation:
reducing environmental impact. Operators
face additional challenges, however, related to
the most common fuel source for gas turbines
in offshore operations: associated gas. These
challenges include variation in its composition
from field to field, well to well and over time;
and scenarios in which there is an insufficient
supply of associated gas to fuel a power plant
over the lifetime of a field.
Learn how Siemens – a major, global provider
of gas turbines with DLE combustors – addresses
issues arising from variation in composition
and insufficient supply of associated gas. More
than 450 Siemens gas turbines with DLE combustors, including 60 in offshore environments,
provide power on oil & gas operations. This
presentation will feature case studies drawn
from Siemens’ extensive body of experience.

Offshore Production
Topside Solutions for
Offshore Production Facilities
Optimizing offshore operations through a
systematic approach to equipping production
facilities and a comprehensive portfolio of
associated technologies
Today’s offshore oil and gas operators face a
host of challenges, including remote locations,
harsh environments, extreme climates and space
constraints. They require solutions that not only
ensure the day-to-day reliability and availability
of equipment in such hostile conditions, but
that are also safe, efficient, cost-effective, and
that minimize environmental impact.
Siemens has extensive experience as a single
source supplier of innovative automation,
electrical, compression, pumping and power
systems tailored for offshore structures.
Our offerings span the complete power supply
system, via the drives, compressors, and integrated process systems for gas and water;
to integrated automation and control systems.
And, we can guide customers through the early
stages of front-end engineering through design,
supply and commissioning, to operations and
maintenance services.
Drawing on the company’s extensive experience as a single source supplier for offshore
structures, the speakers will discuss a systematic approach to overcoming challenges and
optimizing offshore operations. In addition,
the speakers will elaborate on key topside
technologies in the Siemens portfolio, including e-houses – prefabricated, space-saving
substations that contain switchgear and other
power distribution equipment.

Automation is critical in many industries,
including Oil & Gas. There is a growing trend
in the offshore market to use more off-theshelf automation technology, which offers
enhanced safety, reliability and functionality.
In addition, the industry demands safer designs,
improved information exchange and efficiency
gains that reduce engineering time and lower
overall lifecycle costs.
This presentation will walk attendees through
the latest engineering innovations available
from Siemens and discuss how integrated
engineering helps reduce engineering time,
costs and system maintenance throughout the
life cycle of a system. Attendees will gain
insight on what Siemens has to offer in both
software and hardware.

Innovations in
Offshore Drilling:
Power and Drive Systems
Enhance efficiency and minimize environmental impact, while reducing surface footprint in space-constrained environments,
with innovative power and drive systems
High rig rates, increasingly stringent environmental regulations and space constraints are
among the challenges that offshore operators
contend with – on a daily basis. Siemens mitigates these challenges through an assortment
of highly innovative technologies. These include
the DP closed ring power system and the
BlueDrive CLEAN offshore drive system.
Our fault-tolerant DP closed ring power system
for mobile offshore drilling units ensures a
redundant power supply to vital consumers like
drilling and thruster drives. It minimizes the
number of engines online, thereby optimizing
operational performance. Specific advantages
of its unique design include reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions and diesel engines
that run at a higher load level.
The highly compact BlueDrive CLEAN offshore
drive system is widely used in the marine and
offshore oil & gas industries. Applications
include drilling, thrusters, electrical jacking;
and regardless of the application, BlueDrive
CLEAN delivers field-proven dependability and
a space-saving design.
