VOICES FROM OUR FACULTY 2014 Satisfaction Survey EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Janet Fleetwood, Ph.D. Office of the Provost 2014 FACULTY SATISFACTION SURVEY | 2 SURVEY BACKGROUND & METHODOLOGY • Based on comments about the time required to complete previous lengthy faculty satisfaction surveys, the Office of the Provost devised a 10-minute, customized survey to gather information about the needs and interests of all Drexel faculty members, including our adjunct faculty members. William Rosenberg, Ph.D., Professor of History and Politics and Director, Drexel University Survey Research Center, designed, implemented, and analyzed the 2014 Faculty Satisfaction Survey. Additional analysis was provided by Antonis Asprakis, M.S., Assistant Director of Academic Development. • The 2014 Faculty Satisfaction Survey was conducted using the web-based Qualtrics survey tool, and a variety of best practices were employed to gather the data, including a generous window to complete the survey (March 4, 2014 to March 17, 2014), use of the Provost’s official web communication format, and reminders for all those that had not completed the survey to further enhance the response rate. 2014 FACULTY SATISFACTION SURVEY | 3 SURVEY BASICS • 2,650 faculty members invited to participate, 751 responded (28.3%)* * Published results of faculty surveys vary dramatically when utilizing web-based tools, and can be as low as 15.6%. In reviewing the responses, there appears to be an appropriate distribution across colleges and there is a cross section of full-time and adjunct faculty, meaning that the results should generalize to the entire faculty population. Given these factors, the sample size that was obtained in this study should be considered substantial and useful for assessment of faculty satisfaction.
