ENGLISH COURSES ENG 1D - Grade Nine Academic English Students will read a variety of texts including a novel, short stories, poetry, and a play. This course emphasizes structured paragraph writing (leading to an essay), presentation skills, and adhering to the writing process. ENG 2D - Grade Ten Academic English ENG 2D invites students to read a variety of literary texts, including poetry, short stories, novels and drama. A number of analytical techniques are introduced in order to help students construct meaning from what they read. There will be an emphasis on responding personally to independently chosen novels. PREREQUISITE: ENG 1D NBE 3U - English : Contemporary Aboriginal Voices This course focuses on themes, forms, and stylistic elements of a range of literary, informational, and graphic texts of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit authors in Canada. They will analyze changes in use of text forms by Aboriginal authors over time periods and within cultures while expressing themes of identity, relationships, and sovereignty in the 21st century. Students will create oral, written and media texts to explore their own ideas and understanding focusing on the development of literacy, communication, critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. The course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 University Preparation Course. PREREQUISITE: ENG 2D OR 2DB ETS 4U - Religion and Literature This course examines the beliefs and practices of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Students will consider novels, movies, and scriptures that express the main idea of each religion. Critical thinking, essay writing, and presentation skills are central to the course. PREREQUISITE: ENG 3U or NBE 3U EWC 4U - The Writer’s Craft This course is for students who love to write and want to improve their skills. Students will analyze and write many different forms of writing such as short stories, poetry, and personal essays. PREREQUISITE: ENG 3U or NBE 3U ENG 4U - Grade 12 University Preparation English ENG 1P - Grade Nine Applied English This course is designed to develop the key oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills students need for success in Secondary School and daily life. Students will read, interpret, and create a variety of informational, literary, and graphic texts. An important focus will be on identifying and using appropriate strategies and processes to improve students’ reading strategies, comprehension of texts and to help them communicate clearly and effectively. The course is intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 applied English course, which leads to college or workplace courses in Grades 11 and 12. ENG 1L - Grade Nine Essential English A strong focus of this course is developing literacy and communication skills through written and oral work. Students develop and practice listening, reading, viewing, writing, and thinking skills. ENG 2P - Grade Ten Applied English Students will develop their literacy skills and prepare for the The Ontario Literacy Test by reading a variety of texts including drama, articles, graphic texts, online information sources, and a novel. Students will work on reading comprehension strategies, oral presentation skills, short responses, summaries, listening skills, news articles, opinion pieces and informational texts. PREREQUISITE: ENG 1D OR 1P ENG 2L - Locally Developed English Designed to improve and build on the student’s reading, writing, listening, and thinking skills using graphic texts, current news events, and a variety of media. PREREQUISITE: ENG 1L OR 1P ENG 3U - Grade 11 University Preparation English Students will read and analyze literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures. Sample texts include The Rez Sisters, Macbeth and The Kite Runner. There is a major focus on developing critical thinking and communication skills. These skills will be measured via essays, presentations, and a research report. PREREQUISITE: ENG 2D OR 2DB ENG 3C - Grade 11 College Preparation English Students will develop literacy, communication, critical and creative writing skills. Students will develop such skills through the study of novels, play, and short stories. An important focus will be on using language for both practical and academic purposes. A major focus is social activism. PREREQUISITE: ENG 2D or 2P ENG 3E - Grade Eleven Workplace English This course is designed to develop literacy, communication, critical and creative thinking skills. Students will read a novel and a variety of short stories. Additionally, students will apply their knowledge to the study of a selection of films. Students will develop their writing skills through a series of paragraphs. PREREQUISITE: Any Grade 10 English credit This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, written and oral communication, and critical thinking skills. Students will analyze a range of challenging texts and media texts including but not limited to a play, novels, plays, media, and short stories. A strong focus will be on structural essay writing and presentation skills. PREREQUISITE: ENG 3U or NBE 3U EWC 4C - The Writer’s Craft This course is for students who love to write and want to improve their skills. Students will analyze and write many different forms of writing such as short stories, poetry, and personal essays. PREREQUISITE: ENG 3C ENG 4C - Grade 12 College English Students will read a course text, discuss and explore media’s effects on society and individuals, as well as ethical issues facing society as a whole. Specific focus will be on communication ideas to an audience, researching skills, and clear, controlled writing. PREREQUISITE: ENG 3C ENG 4E - Workplace English This course emphasizes developing and improving language skills needed in the workplace. Students will be given the opportunity to develop and demonstrate presentation skills, letter writing, research and creative desktop publishing skills. PREREQUISITE: Any Grade 11 English
