A central area of exploration is the role of Internet-based social networking technologies in influencing discourse among citizens and their governments. The Center’s mission includes: ★ Inspiring student and public participation in politics, engaging the next generation of public service leaders, in the United States and abroad ★ Investigating contemporary technologies and their effect on political communication and on citizenship ★ Supporting leading-edge, nonpartisan research by both faculty and students, using the tools of social science ★ Supporting public events and programs at the intersection of politics and communication ★ Expanding knowledge about political communication in the United States and worldwide. The Center includes research and teaching faculty in political science, communication, history and public policy. It focuses on the relationship among new modes of communication, citizenship and politics. The Center presents major, high-visibility campus events featuring the most prominent and successful role models in politics and public policy. Government officials, journalists, political strategists, professional communicators and international experts meet personally with undergraduates for indepth discussion of current affairs in the Center’s “National Agenda” series annually. In election years, the Center also sponsors nationally-broadcast debates at the University among candidates for federal office. Vice President Joe Biden, a University of Delaware alumnus, has donated the records of his nearly four decades in the U.S. Senate to the University of Delaware, where they will inspire students, scholars and others to exercise their citizenship and to become tomorrow’s public policy leaders. “The epicenter of politics” Bloomberg News has called the University of Delaware “the epicenter of politics,” and a New York Times columnist described UD as a “maker of political kings” because Vice President Biden, and David Plouffe and Steven Schmidt, chief strategists of the Obama and McCain campaigns in 2008, are alumni. The University also counts New Jersey Governor Chris Christie among its alumni, along with many other UD graduates serving in government, media and public policy careers. The Center and its activities are supported by grants from major foundations, by gifts from individuals, and by the University of Delaware. Its Advisory Council is nonpartisan. Its research director is UD faculty member Dr. Paul R. Brewer. Research & Publications MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR STUDENTS, FACULTY, THE STATE AND THE NATION The University of Delaware’s Center for Political Communication has created a considerable body of work to the knowledge literature in its first five years, with 18 publications and one book attributable to CPC-affiliated faculty and students. These interdisciplinary projects have engaged twelve authors, including six faculty members, three graduate students and three undergraduates. National Agenda Public Opinion Project MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR STUDENTS AND THE UNIVERSITY Multiple opinion surveys go beyond traditional “horse race” and popularity polling to explore how citizens understand key emerging policy issues and how new technologies transform the ways they engage with politics. These projects, led by an interdisciplinary team of researchers, give students opportunities for real-world research experiences and expand UD’s visibility in national media coverage and policy discussions. Breaking ground in campaign polling, the University of Delaware’s National Agenda Public Opinion Research Initiative combines traditional survey techniques with innovative methods such as focus groups, experiments, and behavioral observation to follow voters through election cycles and policy debates, observing how they consume and react to political messages and media. ★ For scientific and demographic integrity, each national public opinion survey is a $40,000 enterprise. Multiple surveys are critical to track rapid changes in internet-fueled campaigns and debates. Projects are supervised by Associate Director for Research, Dr. Paul R. Brewer. Illustrative projects: ★ National Survey Shows Public Opposes News Media Showing Images of ISIS Beheadings (January, 2015) ★ Solid Majority of Delawareans Support Legalizing Marijuana (October, 2014) ★ National Survey Shows Public Overwhelmingly Opposes Internet “Fast Lanes” (November, 2014) ★ Nationwide Study: Racial Images Shape Opinion on Voter ID Laws (October, 2014) ★ Delawareans Rate Their Elected Officials Highly (October, 2014) ★ National Survey Shows Fox News Viewers are Least Informed, Most Negative, About Occupy Wall Street (January, 2012) ★ National Survey Shows Public Is Deeply Divided on Health Insurance Mandate (June, 2012) Impact MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THE NATION The National Agenda Public Opinion Project at the University of Delaware has already produced national and international visibility for the University, the Center and its faculty, centered on here-andnow public policy issues such as Internet neutrality, legalization of marijuana, voter ID laws, and the role of social media in censoring images of terrorist acts. w w w. u d e l . e d u / e p i c e n t e r CENTER FOR POLITICAL COMMUNICATION !3 CENTER FOR Celebrating 5 years POLITICAL COMMUNICATION DELAWARE DEBATES Since 2010, the Center for Political Communication has initiated and hosted on campus formal, televised election year debates for the highest offices in Congress and the governorship. These are the state of Delaware’s only formal face-offs following national-standard political debate rules. Several have been nationally-televised on C-SPAN and CNN, bringing significant reputation-enhancing attention to the University. In 2010, the Delaware Debates attracted journalists from around the world, and were evaluated as having attracted millions of dollars in publicity to UD. Staging such debates is a major undertaking for the CPC during election years, involving collaboration with many University departments, and with Delaware public media. Students participate in producing the debates, including developing questions addressed to the candidates and working with the broadcast team. The University of Delaware Today THE CONTEXT FOR THE CPC The University of Delaware has a great tradition of excellence, from its founding as a small private academy in 1743, to the research-intensive, technologically advanced institution of today. Our alumni tell our story of achievement, from our first class, which included three signers of the Declaration of Independence and one signer of the U.S. Constitution, to the more than 145,000 living Blue Hens who are making vital contributions to the world. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and his wife, Jill, are both UD alumni. The University received its charter from the State of Delaware in 1833 and was designated one of the nation’s historic Land Grant colleges in 1867. Today, UD is a Land Grant, Sea Grant and Space Grant institution. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies UD as a research university with “very high research activity” – a designation accorded fewer than 3 percent of U.S. colleges and universities. UD ranks among the nation’s top 100 universities in federal R&D support for science and engineering. A state-assisted, privately governed institution, UD offers a broad range of degree programs: 4 associate programs, 137 bachelor’s programs, 117 master's programs, 50 doctoral programs and 12 dual graduate programs through our seven colleges and in collaboration with more than 60 research centers. Our student body encompasses nearly 17,000 undergraduates, 3,700 graduate students and 850 students in professional and continuing studies from across the country and around the globe. Our distinguished faculty includes internationally known authors, scientists and artists, among them Nobel laureates, Guggenheim and Fulbright fellows, and members of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. State-of-the-art facilities support UD academic and public service activities. Our 146-foot coastal research vessel, Hugh R. Sharp, the most advanced in the U.S., helps scientists across the region explore the sea. World-class figure skaters train at our High Performance Figure Skating Center. Partnerships with Nemours/A. I. du Pont Hospital for Children, Christiana Care and Thomas Jefferson University; the U.S. Army; Winterthur; Longwood Gardens and Hagley Museum offer unparalleled experiences in health sciences, defense research, art conservation, horticulture and history. The University is now transforming a 272-acre parcel, the site of a former auto assembly plant, into a science and technology campus. Distinguished speaker series, symposia, 21 intercollegiate athletics programs and numerous intramural and club sports, more than 300 student organizations, concerts, exhibits, and other arts and cultural activities enrich campus life. Thomas Jefferson once described Delaware as a “jewel” among states due to its strategic location on the East Coast, halfway between Washington, D.C., and New York City. Today, however, the location of Delaware's flagship university increasingly is invoked as “halfway between Los Angeles and London.” A thriving study-abroad program and expanding international partnerships further enhance our students' education as global citizens.
