The Meeting of the Hope College Alcor Chapter of Mortar Board

March 24, 2009

The Alcor Chapter of Mortar Board met at 8 pm in room 237 of the Martha Miller Center.

Those present: Alex Griffith, Allison Hawkins, Anna Gagliardi, Ashley Barbieri, Ashley

Westcott, Brian McLellan, Caitlin Lamade, Carolyn Courtade, Chelsea Vandlen, Christine

Washington, Chris Lewis, Dani Johnson, Erin Fortner, Jackie Lewis, Jacob Lyons, Jennifer Fait,

Jon Koopmans, Jon Moerdyk, Katie Holm, Krista Mehari, Molly Smith, Paul Connelly, Rachel

VanKempen, Ross Knoll, Ryan Davis, Dr. Portfleet, Mrs. Bultman

Those excused: Britney Jatzo, Jon Barrus, Erin Sundberg, Ashley Gruenberg, Meghan Wahl,

Victoria Barr, Yuliya Ganenko, Daniel Lithio

Those absent:

Alex Griffith opened the meeting at 10:05. Caitlin Lamade gave a summary of the Disabilities

Prom. About 40-50 people showed up. Everyone had a lot of fun. Ashley Barbieri got a thankyou email from the Friendship House and the Brothers House.

Ryan Davis danced (well, stayed on his feet) for all 24 hours at Dance Marathon. The

Zimmermans spoke, and our Miracle Child, Mallory, stayed awake for most of the time.

Alex needs every chair person/event chair to write a report on their event to assist next year’s group. If you were not at this meeting and did chair an event, please email Alex to let him know.

For reading at Van Raalte elementary, we need at least one more person. That is tomorrow,

Wednesday, from 2:30 -3:00 pm. Please contact Chelsea Vandlen if you can participate. You will need to bring your own story book—if you don’t have one, Dr. Portfleet would love to loan you one; she will leave her office door open, so help yourself. Also, our library has books.

Allison Hawkins volunteered to drive.

This coming Sunday is new member induction at 3 pm in Maas. Executive board members should be there by 2:15 or 2:30 pm. This is a formal event, so dress is business casual.

Wearing of the Blue Breakfast is coming up. Jon Moerdyk and Brett Kingma are looking for a speaker. Every freshman and sophomore from the Dean’s List are invited; they need to RSVP for the event. This is April 4. The room needs to be reserved, and the food must be ordered.

Mortar Board members are invited; if you can make it, RSVP to jonathan.moerdyk@hope.edu

.

We need people to serve the food and to clean up as well. Again, sign up with Jon Moerdyk.

Professor Appreciation Open House is Friday April 17 from 2-5 pm at Western Theological

Seminary. Later, we will let people sign up for bringing food (light snacks/hors d’oevres) and beverages. Right now, you can pick up between 2 and 3 (hopefully 2) invitations to give to your favorite professors—if you weren’t here and need to pick some up, they will be outside Dr.

Portfleet’s office.

Our next meeting is two weeks from today. Caitlin Lamade is trying to put together a presentation of the things we’ve done, so if you have pictures, please email them to her.

A new group on campus is promoting Earth Day. People will be guarding dumpsters to make sure good stuff isn’t being thrown out on move out days. This might be something the new group wants to get involved in. They need people for four hours a day for two weeks; even giving one hour would be good. There will be trailers to take people’s reusable stuff (furniture, shoes, clothes, electronics, dried food).

The next meeting is with everyone (including new members) and this will be our last general meeting.

Erin Fortner talked about the I HOPE program that provides Ipods and Itunes gift certificates to chronically ill children at Holland Hospital. This might be something the future group is interested (donating I-Pods or I-tunes gift certificates, etc).

Also, for the future, we may want to expand the invitation of Disabilities Prom to include people from SE GR and Zeeland, as some of this year’s guests had children in homes in those areas who weren’t invited.

Mrs. Bultman has medals for people who weren’t at her dinner. You can pick them up for her.

Alex closed the meeting at 10:30 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Krista Mehari, Secretary
