Some call it a sign
of the times — a new and exciting way to
recruit students to Universities. As colleges
compete for enrollment, building recreational
facilities has become a thriving business. A recent survey by the National Intramural-Recreational
Sports Association (NIRSA) concluded that in a construction report, $3.9 billion in projects including
new construction, renovations and expansion projects are currently underway at over 174 colleges and
Universities between 2008 and 2013. These colleges have a combined enrollment of over 2.5 million
students. The facilities being built in the report are expected to serve over 1.87 million students. With
that news, the Student Recreation Center at SFA is showing it has brought its ‘A’ game and is ahead of
the pack in the growing industry. The facility at SFA opened on September 22, 2007 and has been a hit
with students, faculty and alumni. The numbers don’t lie. Since the facility’s opening, along with a new
Student Center, new dorms and other ways to improve student life, the Fall 2008 enrollment report at
SFA showed its largest increase in students in 10 years. SFA’s
Student Recreation Center sees an average of over 12,000 visitors per week and the numbers continue to show growth. The
Student Recreation Center offers a wide variety of fitness
programs and activities for members to enjoy. For more information on colleges’ projects, visit www.NIRSA.org.

Message from the Director of Campus Recreation
Dear Members,
We are excited to bring you our second edition of our member newsletter! We recently celebrated our one year anniversary
of the Student Recreation Center and our programs are continuing to grow and improve. I’d like to share with you some of
our recent accomplishments.
First of all, our participation numbers have been very strong so far this semester. We are averaging over 12,000 visits per
week this fall. Obviously SFA’s enrollment growth has something to do with this, but we also hope that a positive atmosphere
has impacted our increased numbers. To me, the success of our programs is much more important than raw participation rates
in the doors of the Rec Center.

Our intramural program is off to an excellent start. We currently have 118 intramural flag football teams registered, compared
to Sam Houston with 107 and their larger enrollment. The Campus Recreation department is also hosting a NIRSA Flag
Football Regional Tournament November 7-9. This tournament will include teams from other schools and will serve as a
play-in tournament for the National Flag Football Tournament. Other schools hosting a regional include: University of Iowa,
Ohio State, Arizona State, University of Maryland, Cornell, Southeast Missouri, and Southern Mississippi. Between the
teams, officials, and fans we expect approximately 800 visitors to campus for the tournament.
Our Outdoor Pursuits program has made great strides over the past year. We have run several successful outing trips this
semester including a horseback riding, a ski diving, and a midnight canoe trip. Unfortunately, the university challenge course
received severe damage during Hurricane Ike. We are currently in the process of scheduling repairs. The Outdoor Pursuits
program in collaboration with the Dept. of Forestry has also been awarded a $104k grant from TX Parks and Wildlife for a
trail project on the wooded lot east of University Drive.
Our Fitness and Wellness program has been growing over the past year. Participation in our group exercise classes is
increasing. We currently have a waiting list for personal training services and are working hard to get more trainers certified.
We have been several wellness programs scheduled for this fall to help educate our participants. We recently hosted a blood
drive at the Rec Center where ninety four individuals donated. Other programs this semester include National Collegiate
Alcohol Awareness Week, World Diabetes Day, The Great American Smokeout, World AIDS Day, and our annual Wellness
Fair.
So, as you can tell we have been building many great programs here at Campus Recreation. We really believe in our mission
to create a positive, educational experience for SFA students. We hope you take advantage of some of these programs
throughout the year.
Michael Maningas If you ever have any suggestions, comments, or simply run into a problem please do not hesitate to contact me or any of our
Outdoor Pursuits staff. We really do want you to enjoy your time participation at the Rec Center!

Faculty, staff and students who receive a voucher will be instructed to present a campus-issued photo ID and the printed
voucher. The purpose of the program is to allow faculty, staff, and student members of NIRSA of participating institutions to
use the recreational facilities of other participating institutions for free when they travel. It is NOT designed to give these same
individuals unlimited use of any one host institution’s facilities, even within the 30-day period specified on the voucher.
How do I get a voucher?
SFA is a current NIRSA Institutional Member. That’s great news for you! If you wish to use the program, all you have to do is be a
faculty, staff or student member of the recreation center. Visit the main office in the Student Recreation Center and tell the front desk
you wish to join the Passport program and our professional staff will confirm your eligibility for the requirement. If you are approved,
our staff will send in the neccessary information and you will receive an email confirmation within two business days stating that you
can print and use your voucher at a host institution. The voucher will be good for 30 days from the date it was requested, not the date
it was received or printed.

Tip of the Month
Stressed out? Exercise.
Your cares and troubles could be lifted
with a regular regimen of moderateintensity weight training.
Researchers at the University of Florida,
Gainesville, divided 51 men and 33
women into three groups: One group
performed four exercises at 50 percent
capacity, a second group performed the
same exercises at 80 percent, while a
third control group watched a video on
resistance training.
Anxiety levels and mood states, blood
pressure and heart rate were assessed at
regular intervals throughout the sessions,
with the greatest reductions in anxiety seen
in the moderate-resistance exercise, three
hours after the workout was completed.
Higher-intensity exercise did not
significantly improve anxiety, nor did
watching the video. For more helpful tips
visit www.acefitness.org.
