The Campus Recreation Department is officially making
its mark in its second year on
SFA’s campus. The department has definitely taken
shape and started a tradition
that offers members a wide
variety of healthy activities at
all ability levels. Opportunities for active competition, fitness conditioning, skill building, stress
release, leadership development and peer socialization will be available through Campus Recreation programming. Members will be able to take advantage of new and exciting opportunities through various programs offered. We are excited to let our patrons know that the Fitness
and Wellness staff are offering several new Group Exercise Classes for the Fall ‘08 semester
— over 30 — to be exact. Along with new fitness classes, bigger and better events are planned
not only for the month of August, but for the entire Fall semester. A Welcome Back Luau is
scheduled to make a splash for our faculty, staff and students
during the first week of the semester and for the first time
in school history, SFA is hosting the Region IV National
Flag Football tournament at the Intramural Fields. The
Department is growing and members are encouraged to
come take avantage of a new SFA tradition on Campus!

Message from the Director of Campus Recreation
Dear Members,
We are excited to bring you our first edition of our member newsletter! As we approach our one year anniversary of the
new facility it is important to us that we continue to work on improving our communication with you, our users.
Like many other departments on campus, we are reviewing our mission, policies, and procedures as we prepare for
the upcoming school year. Because it is at the forefront of our minds right now, I thought it would be appropriate to
share with you some of our departmental goals. When talking about why our department exists it really comes down
to three things: 1) We are here to serve as a recruiting tool for new students. 2) We exist to retain the students that we
currently have on campus. We do this by contributing to the quality of life on our campus and making SFA a place
where students want to be. 3) Lastly, but most importantly, we do have an educational component to our mission as
well. We all know that learning can occur in every aspect of college life as well as inside the classroom.

Facilities
& Membership Services
The backbone to all of our programs and services is our educational mission. Whether we do it by enforcing
sportsmanship policies in intramural games; or by teaching participants about flora/fauna during a hiking trip through
our Outdoor Pursuits program; or by developing leadership skills for Sport Clubs officers; or by teaching those basic
work skills (like how to show up to work on time) to our student employees; or by simply encouraging our users to
develop healthy lifestyle habits by raising awareness during National Alcohol Awareness Week, National Diabetes Day,
the Great American Smokeout, or other events throughout the year-- we are always intentional about how participation
in our programs and services contribute to the education of the SFA student body. I just received an email from a
former student yesterday who wanted to thank us for providing a “laboratory experience” for her to learn some of
those necessary life/job skills while she was a student employee in our department. That is what it is all about for us.
As a faculty, staff, spouse or alumni member you may ask: “What does this mean for me? I’m not a student!” Hopefully
we are not only providing you with a state-of-the-art award winning facility to utilize but also with an enjoyable
experience as well. In addition, we truly value having faculty, staff, and alumni using the facility and programs side by
side with the students. Nothing teaches better than a strong role model and you can play a significant part in helping
us create this educational environment when you interact with students at the Recreation Center.
So, as you can tell we are not just about sweat here at Campus Recreation. We really believe in the importance of our
role in providing a safe, fun, welcoming, and educational environment for the SFA community. We hope you will join
us in embracing these aspirations of contributing to the quality of life on our campus and to the educational mission
of the university as a whole.
If you ever have any suggestions, comments, or simply run into a problem please do not hesitate to contact me or any
Michael Maningas of our staff. We really do want you to enjoy your time participating at the Rec Center!

New!
The Campus Recreation Department has changed the way we do memberships! We are hopeful that
the new way we distribute memberships is easier to understand and more flexible to meet your needs.
So what have we done? Memberships are now sold on a monthly term. This means you can purchase a
one-month membership or as many months as you want. It doesn’t have to be for a semester. As always,
unless you are eligible and sign up for payroll deduction, you must pay for your entire membership when
you sign up. If you sign up for payroll deduction, you will only have to pay the first month of your membership when signing up. Your payroll deduction will then kick in to pay the remainder of the membership.
For more information, check out the membership section of our website at www.sfasu.edu/campusrec or
read some of our Membership Eligibility Policies below.

Membership Eligibility Policies
• All patrons must have a Validated SFA I.D.. before becoming a member of the facility. Validated SFA I.D. may be purchased at the ID Office in
the Baker Pattillo Student Center for $5.
• All membership fees, except Students taking on campus classes, are broken down by a monthly basis. You may choose to join as many or as few
months as you like when joining. Memberships must be paid in full upon becoming a member unless payment is through payroll deduction. A
member joining after the 15th of the month will be prorated to $15.
• Any member who chooses to cancel their membership is entitled to a refund of the remaining months left on their membership. To receive a
$15 reimbursement for the month you cancel, you must cancel on/before the 15th of that month. Any cancellations after the 15th of the month
will not be reimbursed for that month. All cancellations must be made in writing to campusrec@sfasu.edu or in person in the Administrative Offices at the Student Recreation Center.
• Payroll deduction is only available for employees who receive a paycheck all 12 months of the year. Your paycheck will be deducted on a
monthly basis until you terminate your membership. Payroll deduction cancellations must occur before the last week of the month to avoid a
deduction for the next month. All cancellations must be made in writing to campusrec@sfasu.edu or in person in the Administrative Offices at
the Student Recreation Center.
• Members who are paying through payroll deduction must pay their first month up front. After the first month, payments for membership will
be taken directly from their pay checks. The first month payment will be $30 until after the 15th of each month, where it will be prorated to $15
until the end of the month.

You’ve heard the old saying: Slow and
steady wins the race. Well, it may also
burn more calories, at least in the long
run.
Researchers at Maastricht University in the Netherlands concluded
that people who engage in moderate
physical activity, such as walking and
biking, had the highest overall physical activity levels.
Their study of 30 men and women
over a two-week period also revealed
that those who exercised vigorously
for short periods of time compensated for that activity by spending a
greater part of their day being sedentary. Please visit www.acefittness.org
for more details on this tip.
