April 2013 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: CALENDAR OF EVENTS: It’s hard to believe that spring is officially here given the cold days we are having, and the snow that doesn’t seem to want to go away. Let’s hope April warms up and fills our days with more sunshine! April 3 April 4 April 5 Our third annual Boogie-a-thon was another great success this year. Staff and students had fun with the Country-Western theme—and they did a fantastic job dancing. Thank you to Madame Stewart and her crew of students who decorated for us this year... and thank you to our grade 7 and 8 dance teams—they did an excellent job leading our students all day long. Overall, we raised approximately $5500.00. This money will go towards supporting special art workshops and presentations for our students this spring. Thank you very much to all of our families who helped to support this initiative! April April April April April April April We have a busy month ahead of us with our Intermediate basketball tryouts and practices starting up for both boys and girls. Mr. Bonter will be coaching our boys team and Mrs. Hollran -Thompson along with Mrs. MacPherson will be coaching our girls team. We also have auditions coming up for our “CMES Has Talent” show that will be taking place at Springtime in the Meadows on May 2nd. Thank you to Mrs. White for organizing the “CMES Has Talent” auditions and show—we have many students looking forward to this event. PD Day Reminder: MONDAY APRIL 22nd IS A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY. THERE WILL BE NO CLASSES FOR STUDENTS Late Arrivals: While we’ve noticed some improvement, we continue to have a few too many students arriving late in the mornings. This is often disruptive to the learning environment and can delay the start of classes if all students are not ready to begin. It is best if students can arrive to school between 8:15am and 8:25am. This will allow them a little time on the yard with their peers—but more importantly it also allows them to enter and settle with their class when the bell rings at 8:30am. Thank you for your support with this. Page 2 Parking Lot Issues: Our Credit Meadows’ parking lot is often very congested at drop off and pick up times. Please remember that students should be dropped off and picked up at the north end of the main building and not in front of the school. It is also very important that our lane way in front of the school is not blocked by any vehicles for safety and accessibility reasons. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation with this matter. LOST and FOUND Now that spring is here and the weather is starting to get warmer, this would be an excellent time to have your child check the Lost and Found bins for winter wear (i.e. hats, mitts, boots, etc…). Our lost and found pile is always growing. Unclaimed items will eventually be bagged and donated to charity. Our families certainly love to read! Your support has allowed the Library to purchase hundreds of dollars in new books. Jeff Probst`s new book ``Stranded`` was certainly a big hit. Also, congratulations to Evan in grade 4 – he won $25 worth of books for himself and another $25 for his class! Congratulations to Mackenzie in grade 7 who won the “Librarian for the Day” prize from our Boogie -a-thon. Mackenzie did a fantastic job as Librarian during the last week of March. She spent a day helping to manage the book fair, reading to students, and managing book exchanges. April is Poetry Month. Young and old should take time to explore this wonderful genre. It is a great way to engage readers, especially the young and reluctant. Some of our favourite poets at Credit Meadows are Loris Lysensky, Dennis Lee and Shel Silverstein. Mark April 17 th on your calendar and celebrate National Haiku Poetry Day. Try your hand at writing this 3 line, unrhymed poem with 17 syllables. The Library is looking for your best efforts. Poems of note will appear in our next newsletter. On April 18th our school will once again recognize Poem in Your Pocket Day. On this day students and staff from all grades will have an opportunity to share their favourite poems with one another. Written poems will be displayed in the front hall. Our Forest of Reading program is in the final stretch. Students have been busy writing their response sheets and blogging about their favourite books. The big question now is which books will prove to be the favourites among our readers. Voting for our Blue Spruce readers will take place on April 30th in the library. To celebrate, we will once again have blue snacks and students are encouraged to dress in blue. Our older readers in Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch and Red Maple will vote on the 27th of April. Results will be revealed at a variety of celebrations in May. Thank you once again to our School Council for supporting this important literary program. It’s Back- The Credit Meadows Screen Free Week Challenge April 29th – May 5th. Become more active and turn off all TV screens, video screens and even computers (except for work related activities).
