News from President Tom Jackson, Jr. Feb. 12, 2015 BHSU to Offer Women’s Soccer in 2016 Beginning in fall 2016, BHSU will field its first-ever women’s soccer team. “Adding a women’s soccer team is good for BHSU and good for the entire region,” said BHSU President Tom Jackson, Jr. “Providing an opportunity for intercollegiate soccer competition will bring additional students to BHSU and create opportunities for exceptional female soccer players to compete with the Yellow Jackets.” “We are extremely excited to be adding women’s soccer to our University and Yellow Jackets athletic department,” said athletic director Jhett Albers. “To continue to address our gender equity plan and compliance with Title IX, we feel that women’s soccer is a viable sport with much support in our community, in our conference, and throughout the region.” Art Student Featured Black Hills State University is a place “Where Anything is Possible.” The stories in this report prove that the sky is the limit and dreams become realities at BHSU. From showing artistic expression in adversity, to having an ad created by a BHSU student played during the Super Bowl, to expanding international opportunities, Anything is Possible at BHSU! in Exhibit Ethan Engel, art and graphic design communication major from Winner, takes others through his journey with autism in an art exhibit that opened last week at the Matthews Opera House in Spearfish. The exhibit runs through Feb. 28. Engel recently returned from a trip to Washington, D.C. where a piece of his artwork from the “Transcendence” collection was selected for the VSA Emerging Young Artists Program, a national exhibition that provides young artists the opportunity to display their work. Engel’s submission, “Overcast,” Engel uses a cotton canvas, the color of skin, and words earned an Award of Excellence in the program. from his personal diary to create his artwork. Written in “Overcast” is currently traveling around the United reverse, the words represent communication struggles he States for one year. often faces. “Transcendence: The Journey of Autism,” tells the story of Engel’s struggle with Asperger’s, a form of high functioning autism. “Starting here at BHSU I wanted to become an artist, but I wasn’t sure where I was going with it. When I brought my life with autism into my work, it brought such positive feedback to the people around me. For me to develop to this next level, I’m proud. I’m showing my leadership skills.” Ad By BHSU Student Shown Regionally During Super Bowl BHSU student Bryce Boser meets with President Jackson to discuss his winning entry in the “Where Anything is Possible” marketing contest. Boser’s ad played regionally during the Super Bowl. Bryce Boser, mass communication major from Box Elder, won a University marketing contest and his winning ad aired regionally during the Super Bowl. One of 12 finalists in the “Where Anything is Possible” marketing tagline contest at BHSU, Boser’s ad features several outdoor and campus scenes captured using his wearable action camera. The contest provided students an opportunity to design marketing concepts to launch the University’s new tagline. A panel of nine judges, all BHSU alumni from across the nation working in the marketing field, evaluated the finalists’ entries. President Jackson said the contest was so successful that plans are being made to extend the contest into an annual event. In his temporary voluntary position at BHSU, Braverman is serving as chief of staff for the president, providing leadership for committee work and special projects, and completing a comprehensive study for specific areas of BHSU. Braverman visits BHSU as the University’s first Presidential Fellow. Yellow Jackets Host ‘I Hate Cancer’ Night Sting wears her “I Hate Cancer” T-shirt in support of cancer survivors. “I hate cancer,” President Jackson said. “I hate cancer because that terrible disease took my father away from me.” In January, BHSU designated a doubleheader basketball game as “I Hate Cancer” Night. T-shirts were sold in a variety of colors to honor and support those diagnosed with cancer. “It’s such a widespread, ugly disease,” said Jordan Bauer, assistant women’s basketball coach at BHSU whose father passed away from colon cancer. “This is a way to bring everyone together and fight for the same reason.” Over $3,000 was raised during “‘I Hate Cancer’ Night to benefit the Dennis Bauer Family Scholarship Memorial Endowment. Dennis Bauer, the father of Jordan Bauer, coached high school basketball for 17 years. BHSU Hosts International Visitor, Works BHSU recently hosted Barongwa Master Baipidi (Masterb) (center), a representative from the Embassy of the Republic of Botswana. Masterb met with BHSU deans, staff, faculty and students to discuss forming an exchange partnership with the University. to Dean’s List Congratulations to the students named to the fall 2014 Dean’s List!
