Year
Black Hills State University alum Kaitlin Klopfenstein’s creativity in the
classroom was noticed by the Wyoming Art Education Association who
awarded her the New Professional of the Year Award recently.
Originally from Rapid City, Klopfenstein graduated from BHSU in 2014
with an art and elementary education degree. She now teaches art for
kindergarten through second-grade in Douglas, Wyo.
From clay, to drawing, acrylic, to water colors, Klopfenstein uses a variety of mediums in her classroom. She says
the art component of her degree from BHSU gave her an overview of methods and student teaching showed her
classroom management techniques she uses every day.
“I encourage individuality with the students’ art projects, I don’t want the results to look the same,” says
Klopfenstein. “It’s about the process and allowing the student to make choices of their own – to have a piece that
reflects them.”

BHSU Newman Center Reaches Fundraising Milestone
The vision of building a Newman Center, a spiritual “home away from home”
on the BHSU campus, is closer to becoming a reality. The Newman Center Capital
Campaign recently reached 50 percent of their fundraising goal.
A mission of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Newman Center will provide a
place where students, staff, and faculty can go for worship, spiritual direction,
religious education, and quiet place to study, community service, socialization and
recreation.
All are invited to show their support for the Newman Capital Campaign by
joining the “Ride with the Bishop,” a fundraiser motorcycle rally and poker run to
be held June 12.
Visit www.BHSUNewman.com for more information.
The Newman Center at BHSU will be built on University and
King Street near campus.
Alums Gather
at
D.C. Reception
Black Hills State University alumni and friends living in the Washington, D.C.
area gathered at a reception recently to share memories of and show support for
BHSU, their alma mater.
More than 1,600 miles separate Washington, D.C. from the campus in Spearfish,
but for recent graduate Chase Vogel, the connections to BHSU remain strong.
“I’m very happy to have attended the reception and to see some of my favorite
familiar faces,” said Vogel. “There was great energy and networking at the
event.”
