LOVE. MATH. UCCS
Micro-newsletter for UCCS Math Majors, intended to showcase news, upcoming
courses, events and other math-related opportunities at UCCS.
Fall 2015 Newsletter
Editor’s Notes
This newsletter is
designed just for YOU,
Math Undergraduates
at UCCS! There’s so
much happening in the
math world around you,
besides just taking the
required courses! Who would’ve thought
that there is so much
more to a math degree
than meets the eye?
Issue No. 2, September 2015
New Undergrad Chair
Dr. Zak Mesyan
(zmesyan@uccs.edu) is the new Math
Undergrad Chair
starting Fall 2015.
Research Ops
Several faculty offer
research opportunities
for undergraduates.
Make sure to inquire
about these now and in
the future.
New Course
Math 4040 (1 ch) - Senior
Math Seminar - capstone
course for all math majors
is offered for the first time
during Fall 2015. Note
that it also satisfies the
LAS Oral Communication
requirement.
MATH 4040
Math in-House Advising
New Math Computational Lab
The Math Department invites each semester all
Math majors for an in-house advising week
(the next one is in October). This is in addition
to the Student Success advising you are
encouraged to attend throughout the year.
These advising sessions are a gold trove of
information: e.g. which courses math majors
should take etc. For example, in Spring 2016,
one section of Math 2150 (taught by Dr. Greg
Oman) will be catering more towards the math
majors’ needs… UCCSTeach students will be
able to take the new course MATH 3210 - Intro
to Geometry starting Fall 2016, to satisfy their
geometry requirement… Don’t miss out of this
kind of valuable information. Attend the math
in-house advising!
You may have noticed that many of your math
courses are now taking place in OSB B213. This
will be home to the new computational lab run
by the Math Department. Computers will be
installed over the winter break. At the same
time, the Math Department is enhancing its
computational support for undergraduates
through dedicated courses (e.g. MATH 3670 Scientific Computation) or by incorporating
computation in its core Math courses. Feel the
energy and wanna get involved in this
computational effort? Contact Dr. Radu
Cascaval for more information.
In a time when the problems facing the
humankind (from social sciences to space
engineering) are becoming more and more
complex, mathematical skills are increasingly
relevant and sought-after. Employers expect
mathematical sophistication in thinking,
reasoning and in technical abilities. All of these
can be secured by a math degree, alone or in
combination with other fields of study.
UCCS Math Community Gathering On Friday, Sept 18, there will be a Celebration
of All Things Math in the Math Center ENG
233, 4-6pm. Math majors and students who are
thinking of becoming Math majors are
especially encouraged to attend. Free
food and drink, games, info about our
various programs, raffle prizes, etc.

Hello Math Majors!
A mathematics degree provides the flexibility
and power to embark on a wide variety of
scientific
careers,
not
to
mention
mathematician for life! Being a math major @
UCCS gives you the opportunity to choose
upon graduation a path that’s right for you:
pursue a more advanced degree, such as MS or
even PhD (yes, UCCS has a PhD in Applied
Sciences with Math emphasis), work in
industry or teach in secondary education, both locally and nationwide.

Get Involved
While a student here, take advantage of all the
resources provided to you: meet a faculty
member early on: attend the in-house advising,
approach one of your course instructors, or
simply browse faculty by their research
interests. Get extra challenged by considering
the Honors Track. Stay in touch with the Math
Department life: consider one of the
opportunities (student competitions, colloquia,
etc) highlighted in this newsletter or on the
Department website www.uccs.edu/math.
Math Club needs YOU!!!
The Math Club needs enthusiastic officers to
coordinate student-oriented activities (such as
guest speakers, pizza days, field trips, math
competitions, and why not, logo competitions
and even social networks presence). You can be
the next student leader!
News bits around the department
Please welcome our newest faculty, Dr. Oksana
Bihun, who joined the Math Department this
Fall. More information about faculty research
and other departmental happenings is
available in the annual Departmental
Newsletter. Past newsletters are available at www.uccs.edu/math/math-news/newsletter.html
Be on the lookout for the next issue, to appear
in Dec 2015.
