U C C S M A T H M AUCCS J O R S I N F O C U S MATH @ UCCS Micro-newsletter for UCCS Math Majors, intended to showcase news, upcoming courses, events and other math-related opportunities at UCCS. Fall 2014 Newsletter Editor’s Notes This newsletter is designed just for YOU, Math Undergraduates at UCCS! There’s so much happening in the math world around you, besides just taking the required courses! Who would’ve thought that there is so much more to a math degree than meets the eye? Issue No. 1, August 2014 Math Dept Chair Dr. Robert Carlson assumes the role of Math Department Chair starting August 1st, 2014. New Courses Math 3670 - Scientific Computation I (3 ch) is offered for the first time during Fall 2014. Research Ops Several faculty offer research opportunities for undergraduates. Make sure to inquire about these now and in the future. Math Majors Welcome to Fall 2014! These are exciting times, when a lot of new science is being generated everyday. And all of it requires advanced math. So we believe that a degree in mathematics offers the flexibility and power to embark on a wide variety of scientific careers, not to mention mathematician for life! Being a math major @ UCCS gives you the opportunity to choose a path that’s right for you upon graduation: pursue a more advanced degree, such as MS or even PhD (yes, UCCS has a PhD in Applied Sciences with Math), work in industry or teach in secondary education. Get Involved While being a student here, take advantage of all the resources provided to you: meet a faculty member early on, either by attending a student advising (see next paragraph), by approaching one of your course instructors, or simply browsing faculty by their research interests. Stay in touch with the Math Department life, by attending one of the opportunities (colloquia, student competitions, etc) highlighted in this newsletter or on the Math Department website http://www.uccs.edu/math Math Distinguished Lecture & Colloquia For a glimpse into what mathematics research looks like, attend one or more of the Math Colloquia this Fall. Make sure you do not miss the Distinguished Math Lecture at UCCS, an annual event featuring a world-renowned mathematician. Math Incline Want to have the extra challenge? Then join the Math Incline, the weekly problem-solving seminar. M AT H I N C L I N E Student Competitions The Putnam Competition (Dec 2014) and the Math Contest in Modeling (Feb 2015) are two opportunities to showcase your competitive side! (5280, 8585) 11 . 20 est (0, 6574) Math Advising Math Club The Math Department invites each semester all Math majors for an in-house advising week (the next one will take place in October), in addition to the Student Success advising you are encourage to attend throughout the year. The Math Club needs enthusiastic officers to coordinate student-oriented activities (such as guest speakers, pizza days, field trips, math competitions, and why not, logo competitions and even social networks presence). You can be the next student leader! Compass Curriculum With the new Gen Ed curriculum in place this Fall, students will have the opportunity to participate in a capstone experience (1-credit hour Math Senior Seminar, MATH 4040). Look for this offering in a future semester. Computational Corner The Math Department is enhancing its computational support for undergraduates. MATH 2650 - Intro to Computational Math (1 credit) and MATH 3650 - Advanced Computational Math (2 credits) give a thorough exposure to state-of-the-art use of computation in math. A new sequence in Scientific Computing (I & II) is also offered. MATLAB tutoring is available in the Math Center (ENG 233) exclusively for students seeking help with computation in their math courses. There is even a physical Computational Math Corner in the Math Center (Thanks, Jenny!), which is dedicated for this purpose. Contact: Dr. Radu C.Cascaval, Undergraduate Math Chair (radu@uccs.edu) New Math Faces Several new people joined the math world at UCCS: Meredith Casey, instructor, is starting this Fall, with a fresh PhD from Georgia Tech. Katherine Cliff is the new Technical Director of the MathOnline Program. She just joined the MS degree in Applied Math. Sean Dean is the new Assistant SI Coordinator in the Math Center at UCCS. More information will be forthcoming in the annual Departmental Newsletter, to appear in early 2015. Trivia ★ Did you know that the Dean of LAS is also a mathematician? In addition to leading the largest college on our campus, Dr. Peter Braza is an expert in nonlinear dynamics and chaos. Just ask him! ★ Mathematics and Art is everywhere. Museum of Math (MoMath) in NYC and numerous other Science Museums across the globe are a testament of this. There are opportunities even at UCCS. see http://facebook.com/uccsaha . Get involved!
