College Heights Secondary School
May Newsletter 2014
Principal’s Report
Hooray, it is actually spring. It was a long and cold winter but we have turned the corner on the 2013-2014
school year and are headed to the finish line! Enclosed you will find your son/daughter’s interim report.
Please take time to review this with your child in hopes of making and/or adjusting plans for this year. As
always, please do not hesitate in contacting the subject teacher for specific information. For students who
are not experiencing success in courses, there are numerous opportunities to complete outstanding credits
through either 4 week or 2 week summer school and, of course, credit recovery next fall. Even better than
these options is the option of credit rescue. Check with teachers and resource staff to see how you and your child can
potentially turn a failure into a pass before the end of the year.
Our last day of classes for this school year is on Wednesday, June 18,
2014. From June 19th through to June 25th students will be completing final
evaluations in their classes. All evaluations begin at 9:00am and students
will be able to work until lunch supported by their teachers. Buses will run
at the regularly scheduled times throughout the exam period. There will
always be a component of each class assessment that will be written
or completed on the scheduled exam day. Students are encouraged to
continue to work hard right until the end.
May 8th to 10th we hosted our annual Spring Sale which was a huge
success. The weather co-operated and it was a great event. A huge
thank-you to all who were involved and especially to our students for the
great things they created!

If your son or daughter is a potential graduate for June, please help them to complete their credits and
community hours so that we can watch them walk across the stage in the fall. As always 40 hours is a
required component for graduation and students can check with guidance for appropriate places to get these
hours done.
College Heights is a well rounded school with not just academic and technical programs but athletic opportunities as well.
Please check the Athletic section of this newsletter for details of their achievements in this area. Finally our Athletic
Awards assembly will be held on June 11th starting at 12:45 pm. We welcome you to join us to celebrate the participation
of our students in all the many activities College Heights has to offer. Let’s continue to work together, to stay focused and
to succeed.

 Brenden Berger and Cody Holdaway competed at
RIM Park in the 25th Annual Ontario Skills Canada
Carpentry – Team of Two competition on May 6. They
had approximately 7 hours to build the garden bench
to the specifications found on the print that they were
given that morning. It was an early
morning, to what became a long day
for the team of two. Brenden and
Cody worked cooperatively and
collaboratively and were successful
in the project completion and high
standard of end product. They
finished in 6th place out of 46 other
teams from all over Ontario. Well

 Our school's annual Spring Sale event was a fantastic
success. The three day event featured our popular
plant sale run by the Green Industries students as well
as a terrific showcase of items crafted and sold by our
Construction, Machine Shop and Welding students.
Hospitality classes hosted a two-day BBQ and ran a
bake sale full of tasty treats. Fine Arts students
staged visual art displays and musical acts and our
Communications Technology classes showed off their
technical skills with exciting green screen technology
photos. Many community members and families
attended the event and enjoyed the festive
atmosphere here at the school. Congratulations to all
who participated in making this such a great event!
 Thanks go out to Saint Gobain and Motion Canada
who were generous and donated a large amount of
sandpaper to our construction program. We used this
when making our spring sale projects - cutting boards,
stools and candle holders.
 On April 24, College Heights hosted the annual Parent
Involvement Committee's spring event. Congratulations
to Mrs. Furfaro's and Chef Darrach's hospitality
students and Mrs. Yate's baking class on a job well
done. The 200 people we served were delighted with
the meal. Way to go Culinary students!
