Students to experience virtual volcano Tuesday
On Tuesday, May 18, more than 2,000 students from 40 schools across the country will explore
Mount St. Helens from the comfort of their classrooms. The fourth- through eighth-grade students
will be participating in Volcano Explorers, an interactive video-conferencing program presented
by the Mount St. Helens Institute that coincides this year with the 30th anniversary of the 1980
eruption.
"May 18th marks the 30th anniversary of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens and is a day
remembered vividly by so many," says Jeanne Bennett, director of the Mount St. Helens
Institute. "Students today are too young to remember the eruption or its aftermath, so this
opportunity gives them the chance to learn about Mount St. Helens and get excited about
scientific inquiry."
As part of the program, three scientists at Mount St. Helens will present a program on the
volcano’s 1980 eruption and the ecological recovery of the past 30 years. They also will be
answering students’ questions. Their interactive, 45-minute presentation will be broadcast live to
pre-registered classrooms connected to the videoconferencing system of southwest Washington’s
ESD112, which is providing the equipment.
For more information about this and other events in honor of the 30th anniversary of the May 18,
1980, eruption, visit http://www.mshinstitute.org.
The Mount St. Helens Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people of all ages
gain an understanding of the natural processes and cultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest’s
volcanic landscapes. The institute promotes stewardship, science, and appreciation of the
Northwest.

Clark College honors April Student Athletes of the Month
Lindsay Sasse
Student athletes competing in softball and track and field have been honored as the April 2010
"Athletes of the Month" at Clark College.
Lindsay Sasse came to Clark from Union High School in Camas. Head softball coach Casey
Powers describes Sasse as "a top performer both inside the classroom and on the softball field for
us this year." Sasse earned a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) during fall 2009 and has maintained
high GPAs throughout the academic year, earning an athletic scholarship.
Tyler Lane
A graduate of Skyview High School, freshman Tyler Lane is leading the Clark track and field
team in jumping events. He has high jumped over 6 feet 9 inches, leading the NWAACC
conference by six inches.
"Tyler is ranked third in long jump for the region and is a great contributor in the 4x100 team as
well. He is a hard working, dedicated and willing to try any event to help the team be successful
in any way possible," says Amber Moore, head track and field coach.
The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic
achievements of Clark's student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee
that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.
Each honoree receives a jacket with his or her name stitched on it. The jackets are provided by
Les Schwab through its support of the Student of the Month program, in partnership with Clark’s
Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.
McCord’s Vancouver Toyota donates “Story Time Van” to support
children’s library programs
McCord’s Vancouver Toyota has donated a three-year lease of a 2011 Toyota Sienna van to the
Fort Vancouver Regional Library Foundation. The van will be dedicated to children’s
programming and will serve a vital role in expanding library outreach to the community.
"We have always had a passion for reading and literacy in our family," Greg Leonard of
McCord’s Vancouver Toyota, said when the gift was announced Monday. "Partnering with the
Library Foundation to reach children throughout our community helps equip children to discover
and experience the value and joy of literacy. We are excited for the opportunity to share with and
give back to our community through The Story Time Van project."
Fort Vancouver Regional Library District (FVRL) spans 4,200 square miles and serves more than
468,000 residents within Clark, Skamania, Klickitat and portions of Cowlitz counties. In 2009,
FVRL conducted 3,350 programs for children and teens. The use of a vehicle dedicated for the
specific purpose of enhancing youth programs will increase the efficiency and exposure of these
services and programs.
With support from NW Natural, The Story Time Van will feature a brightly-colored vinyl wrap
that will serve as a rolling billboard for FVRL libraries, early learning and literacy programs.
"NW Natural is honored to support FVRL District's enhancement to their children's outreach
services with the addition of the 'Story Time Van,'" said Von Summers of NW Natural. "We see
this as a unique opportunity to increase visibility and awareness about the excellent services local
libraries provide."
