OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY BRANDING GUIDELINES VERSION 2.0 INTRODUCTION This Style Guide, Version 2.0, provides a resource for future implementation of the Ohio Northern University brand. The brand guidelines contained in this document describe the essential elements of the brand along with basic instruction for how to use them. We want to ensure that every facet of ONU conveys the same sentiment. Adherence to these guidelines will ensure consistency and recognition of the brand. When the greater ONU brand is recognized, it benefits each of ONU’s schools and programs individually. It should be noted that the elements and uses in this initial guide are open to change. However, these changes will be reviewed and assessed periodically to ensure there is always a single standard usage, overall. 2 OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY TABLE OF CONTENTS BRAND BASICS4 TYPOGRAPHY5 Print Application8 COLOR10 Color Usage10 BRANDING ELEMENTS12 Primary Branding Elements12 ONU LOGOTYPE14 ONU Logotype Colors14 PHOTOGRAPHY16 Style & Application16 Treatement Guide18 COPY, HEADLINES & TONE24 Writing Compelling Headlines 24 Body Copy & Call Outs 24 WEB GUIDELINES26 Grid System26 Typography & Color28 Forms & Buttons30 Modules32 BRAND EXAMPLES37 BRAND GUIDELINES 3 BRAND BASICS WHAT IS A BRAND? Our brand is more than just advertising or our logo. It’s what students, potential students, parents, alumni, and the public in general think and feel about Ohio Northern University, and it’s shaped by numerous interactions and communications. This style guide is a tool to help you strengthen the consistency in these communications, therefore strengthening your brand. When we all speak with the same voice, the message is clearer and therefore more resonant. This document will guide you through the creative concept behind the brand, and through the design and copy guidelines. BRAND DESCRIPTION ONU has been focused on outcomes since 1871. Since our inception we’ve been devoted to developing students who are ready to immerse themselves and go to the next level in everything they do. And while the world and our school have vastly evolved since our founding, the one thing that has remained unchanged is that ONU is rooted in the future. 4 OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY BRAND POSITIONING STATEMENT Ohio Northern University has adopted the following brand positioning statement to summarize the nature and aspirations of the university: “GROUNDS FOR IGNITION” This means that we’re committed to nurturing our students’ intellectual and personal ambitions, preparing them for a prestigious professional life. This statement is an internal guide for marketing communications and should never appear on outward-facing materials. External- facing communications should strive to convey this key message, without ever explicitly using the phrase. TONE The positioning statement is complemented with tonal words that reflect the personality of the University. All ONU communications—from social media posts to employee materials to event promotions—should be guided by the following tone words. • INTIMATE • AMBITION • GENUINE • DETERMINED • NURTURING • PURPOSEFUL BRAND GUIDELINES 5 TYPOGRAPHY PRIMARY The ONU brand’s primary typeface is the timeless, modern sans-serif Neutraface font, set in “Book” weight when used as body copy and “Demi” or “Bold” weight when used as headlines. ONU headlines feature loose tracking to bring attention to the spacious campus and surrounding lands. Using the font in a variety of sizes brings attention to how ONU is constantly evolving, adapting and is always in motion. SECONDARY The ONU brand’s secondary typeface is the prestigious, all-caps Memphis font. Used to support the primary typeface, Memphis carries a sense of purpose. It is used most often in sub-headlines, never used in body copy and can either stand alone or be paired with Neutraface in headlines. 6 OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY NEUTRAFACE 2 TEXT Aa B bC c Dd Ee FfG g H h I i J j K k Ll M m N n Oo PpQ q R rS sTtU uVvWwX xYyZ z 1 2 3 4 5 678 9 0 Light Demi Light Italic Demi Italic Book Bold Book Italic Bold Italic MEMPHIS AaBbCc Dd E eFfG gH h IiJjKkLlMm Nn OoPpQqRrSsTtUuVvWwX xYyZ z 12 345 678 9 0 Light Bold Light Italic Bold Italic Medium Medium Italic BRAND GUIDELINES 7 TYPOGRAPHY: PRINT APPLICATION USAGE EXAMPLES: Neutraface with size variance BEING IN A SMALL TOWN DOESN’T MEAN YOU C A N ’ T H AV E A — ADA, OHIO HAS 5,900 PEOPLE, A HANDFUL OF STOP SIGNS AND A WEALTH OF SUCCESS STORIES. This seemingly small town has produced plenty of big things—and ONU is the engine fueling it. It’s more than our nationally ranked programs in all of our five colleges or the recognition we receive for teaching quality and high graduation rates. It’s about producing graduates who surpass the status quo. One turned manufacturing pet food into a billion dollar business. Another found his way into the homes and hearts of millions when he directed the Oscar-winning film “Up.” Our graduates don’t strive for the ordinary because they don’t pursue an ordinary education. At ONU, it’s more than a four-year commitment; it’s a forty-year outlook. And the work you put in while you’re here will continue paying dividends along the way. ONU graduates have gone on to become Fulbright scholars, US senators, and even Academy-award winners. 8 Since 1941, every NFL Super Bowl football has been made in Ada, Ohio. Glenn Smith, a graduate from ONU with a BS in mechanical engineering, worked on NASA’s Apollo missions. In 1910, President Taft visited Ada to give the commencement address at Ohio Northern University. These modern, clean badges can function as stamps of approval and are designed with classic Midwestern industries in mind. Duotone images present a subdued, historical look and help suggest how ONU wears its heritage proud. Warm-filter images stand alongside to balance the look with a sun-soaked, inviting feel, capturing the look of the Midwest. Juxtaposing the two styles, without overusing them, says ONU keeps a balance between its legacy and its future. 16 OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY BRAND GUIDELINES 17 PHOTOGRAPHY TREATMENT This section details how to create the different ONU photo treatments. Please refer to the photo treatment PDF document. ONU HEROIC TREATMENT W H AT W O U L D YOU DO IF YOU WEREN'T The ONU heroic treatment is achieved by burning the edges of a photograph with an analog film texture and saturating the image 18 51» 50» with a nice orange/yellow tone. OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY LAYER BREAKDOWN The ONU heroic photo treatment is meant to flex according to image you’re working with. You may 9: Place on edge of photo with the blending mode set to “screen” 8: Place on edge of photo with the blending mode set to “screen” need to adjust you colors and layers differently. FF5E26 7: Take the saturation down to -10 6: Use this color overlay, set to the “Screen” blending mode and an opacity of 15% 4: Using a white linear gradient with a “Screen” blending mode and an opacity of 65%—we can lighten the edge of the photo FA9D1A 5: Use this color overlay, set to the “Linear Light” blending mode and an opacity of 5% 2: These values will need to adjust for different photos, but the main focus is our blacks, neutrals, and whites. Pull more black into your blacks, more yellow into your neutrals and if you have a sky or grass that you want to appear more natural you’ll need to adjust that specific color. Here you can see how I was able to make the sky look blue by adding cyan to the white and make the grass look green by adding yellow and cyan to my greens. BRAND GUIDELINES 1: Adjust the curves to help get the lighting right for you photo—this will change for every photo 3: Bumping the “Offset” up no further than .001 helps soften and blend our photo treatment 19 ONU MONOTONE TREATMENT The ONU Monotone treatment is a secondary photo treatment that is very simple to achieve. 1: Start by making your image grayscale in the Image>Mode panel 4: Now, your image is the right color, but the contrast may not be in the right place. Click on the box next to the color swatch and adjust your curves to acheive the right contrast. 20 2: Next, in the same menu, convert your image to a “Duotone” Slight adjustments here will make a big difference 3: After converting your image to a Duotone you’ll reach an options menu. Click on the color swatch and choose one of the ONU approved colors from the Style Guide. 5: Lastly, you’ll want to revisit the “image>Mode” menu to convert you image for what you’re using it for. For print, you need to convert to CMYK. And for Web, you need to convert to RGB. OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY ONU MONOTONE GRADIENT Now you have a Monotone image, which you could go ahead and use, or if you want to add a little more color to it you can—by vignetting another into it. 1.Pull your monotone image into photoshop and add a new layer. 2.Select a secondary color to use—I like this subtle yellow, and I think it’ll pair well the the orange. *Designer note: The pink and this yellow work best 3. Select your gradient tool with your yellow color as your foreground. Make sure your gradient is Linear and Foreground to Transparent. 4.Lastly, adjust your opacity as needed and set your blending mode to “Darken”. ONU MONOTONE GRADIENT FINAL This is how far back you should start your gradient BRAND GUIDELINES 21 ONU LAW HEROIC TREATMENT ONU Law is focused on a more sophisticated audience and with that comes a more sophisticated photo treatment that fouses on a richness in the color. This photo treatment is reserved exclusively for ONU Law. LAYER BREAKDOWN The ONU Law heroic photo treatment is meant to flex according to image you’re working with. You may need to adjust you colors and layers differently. 5: Use this gradient overlay, set to a blending mode of “Lighten” 4: Use this specific layer adjustment—this is what gives the photo it’s richness. Adjust your opacity as needed 2: Place on edge of photo with the blending mode set to “screen” and adjust the opacity 3: Dial the exposure’s “Offset” to .02 and adjust the exposure accordingly 0: Here a darker gradient was added to help with readability of body copy—you may want to use a lighter gradient in some cases. 1: These values will need to adjust for different photos, but the main focus is our blacks, neutrals, and whites. Pull more black, yellow, and magenta into your blacks, more yellow into your neutrals and whites. 22 OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY ONU LAW TONAL TREATMENT This dramatic tonal treatment is reserved exlusively for the ONU Law. There is an action for this photo treatment. USING THE ONU LAW TONAL ACTION Click here for menu Open up the actions panel Open the Actions menu and select “Load Actions” Find an image you want to use and with the ONU-Law Action selected, click the play button on the bottom of the Actions panel BRAND GUIDELINES Find Your “ONU-Law.atn” file and load it Now your ONU-Law Action should show up on your Actons panel Now you have a toned image 23 COPY, HEADLINES & TONE Any copy or headlines used should mirror ONU’s bold, pioneering, and purposeful attitude. A passionate and ambitious voice supports the “roll up your sleeves and get to work” mindset and an intimate, nurturing tone helps show the strengths of ONU’s locale. Writing compelling headlines: PARALLELS Drawing comparisons between two seemingly opposite subjects helps create intrigue in an otherwise straightforward statement. Example: “The definition of success has changed. The pursuit has stayed the same.” Parallels: Changed. Stayed. END WITH A TWIST An ordinary statement can be turned on its head when you add an unexpected ending. These endings should inform the viewer of some unique aspect of the university, like it’s rural setting. Example: “It’s easy to reach for the stars when you can actually see them.” Statement: “It’s easy to reach for the stars” Twist: “when you can actually see them.” IDIOMS Certain sayings can be leveraged to strengthen the readers connection with them. Using something they’ve heard before can be a great way to pull them into the story. Example: “From zero to Nascar in four years.” Idiom: “From zero to sixty in...” Writing supporting copy: BODY COPY When writing body copy for the ONU brand, first you must consider the audience. Then ask, “What am I trying to communicate?” Once these have been established, you can start to craft your story in the following order. Start with a hook— After the headline you must immediately pull them in with an interesting point that makes them want to continue reading. Middle— After the hook is set you can begin to show the supporting story, including facts and supporting points. End— Relate back to the headline/intro. Then challenge them to do take the action you want them to. CALLOUTS These additional support points live outside the story, and are often spoken to in a more straightforward manner that is supported by graphic elements and photography. 24 OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY ALL ROADS IN ADA LEAD TO SUCCESS With top-ranked programs and opportunities outside the classroom, any path you choose at ONU will be grounded in concrete applications for the future. We teach them to take charge in the industry, forge their own successful careers, and cultivate entrepreneurship through hands-on experience. From your first day on campus to graduation and beyond, you’re part of the business school community. Our classes are small, so you can build strong relationships with accomplished, well-connected professors who are personally invested in your success. At ONU, you’ll learn to collaborate and apply critical thinking to abstract problems. You’ll develop an entrepreneurial mindset to create businesses, manage projects, and communicate effectively. It’s a strong foundation of skills that will prepare you not just to enter the business world, but to lead it. College Specific Brochure Polar Elevator Pitch Competition Pharmaceutical Business An “elevator pitch” is a chance for you to sell your best ideas to someone in a way that’s convincing and succinct. Once a semester, students across ONU do just that at the Polar Elevator Pitch Competition. Groups or individuals each have two minutes to pitch a new business or product idea to a panel of judges. Winners receive cash prizes to start their business venture. If you have a passion for both science and business, you don’t have to choose between the two. Our pharmaceutical business program isn’t something you’ll find at most other business schools. But at ONU, when we see a need in the world, like a demand for more professionals who understand the business side of health care, we find ways to fill it. T H E P I TC H O F A LIFETIME Executive Classroom Polar Merchandise As a business student, you have a chance to gain real experience working at Polar Merchandise. Here, students run every aspect of the business—designing merchandise, working with supply chains, conducting market research, and delivering products to customers on time and on budget. In this course, students learn what it takes to become an executive in today’s business world. You’ll study the lives of some of the most successful CEOs, read their books, and even travel to Chicago to meet with executives. It may surprise you to learn how some of them rose to the top, but the moral of the story is usually the same: You have to challenge yourself and be willing to take risks in order to grow. Live Case Capstone Project Each year, businesses let senior ONU students help solve some of their biggest challenges. The capstone is a yearlong group project and often involves global, multibillion-dollar companies. Students work for two semesters researching, developing solutions, executing their ideas, and then presenting their work. In past years, students were so successful that businesses awarded them $5,000 in cash prizes. When Jeremiah Skow’s innovative idea for a metallic wallet failed to receive funding on Kickstarter, he was ready to walk away from it. Luckily he had professors like Dr. Tammy Schakett, who encouraged him not to give up on his idea. With newfound support, Jeremiah rethought his Spectre Wallet and entered the Polar Elevator Pitch Competition. There, he won the highest score in ONU history, along with a $1000 cash prize—but that wasn’t all. The dean of the college coached Jeremiah even further. “I believe in you,” Dean Fenton said, and offered to help Jeremiah with the additional funds needed to apply for a patent; thus launching his business from an idea into reality. Jeremiah never imagined one day he’d be creating and launching his own business. But with his dedication and ongoing support from faculty, he graduated from Dicke College of Business Administration with so much more than a college degree. business@onu.edu LEAD I T. First, the sky comes to life with vibrant colors painting the horizon. Afterward, you’re treated to a celestial light show like no other. As we like to say around here, it’s a lot easier to reach for the stars when you can see them. From a sky full of stars to an atmosphere that is both supportive and competitive, life at ONU Law is one surprise after another. We are more than students and teachers jockeying for a foothold on the legal playing field. We are a tight-knit community, dedicated as much to each other’s success as to our own. Because we know that together we will go further than we will individually. Here, we’ve constructed a cross-examination of sorts. Questions that people ask us about Ada and life at ONU Law. If you don’t see your question answered here, feel free to reach out and ask us anything. from the clutter and noise of the outside world so you can focus on your studies and develop as a lawyer free of distraction – yet close enough to major cities that you’re never far from the action. WHAT SETS ONU LAW APART? The biggest factors that set ONU Law apart are the size and the location. At most law schools, the competition for everything from a professor’s attention to internships is intense. Here, you will be part of a community of learners that will support you while also challenging you to be the best version of yourself. And since we’re near major cities, as well as a host of other areas with the need for quality legal advice, internships and externships are readily available for anyone who wants one. HOW IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FACULTY AND STUDENTS? There may come a day, some years after you graduate, when you realize the true strength of ONU Law. It might be an ordinary Tuesday. You might run into a former professor at a conference and talk with them as a colleague. You’ll realize that, from your first day here, our faculty really gets to know you. That they care about your success as much as their own. This is an attitude that stems from the dean all the way down to the professors and staff, and it’s something that you will learn to value as much as we do. “There’s never a dumb question with our faculty – you can ask them anything. This makes the college more appealing. Faculty views you as an equal.” WHAT’S THE LIVING SITUATION? Some students choose to live on campus and some live off campus. Either way, the cost of living in Ada is extremely low. The average price for a student in a two-bedroom apartment is around $550 a month. So when your friends in other law programs are dreading the debt they’re accruing, you can be assured that you’re graduating with a degree that provides an excellent return on investment – from the tuition to the cost of living. WHAT DO ONU LAW STUDENTS DO FOR FUN? It’s Saturday night. You’ve had an intense week of classes and it’s time to unwind. Maybe you’ll head over to a friend’s house for dinner and then go check out a movie. Maybe you’ll pile into a car and head to Columbus to check out a new club. Whatever you’re doing, you know you won’t be bored. We pride ourselves on a familial atmosphere, and it’s something that runs through classes and off time alike. WHAT ARE THE ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVOLVEMENT? The beauty of ONU Law is that there are as many additional opportunities for involvement as there are interests. Maybe you want to study abroad – we have programs in Europe and Asia. Maybe you’re interested in working for a baseball team one day, so you want to join the Sports Law Society. If what you’re interested in doesn’t have an organization yet, you can start your own. We are a malleable campus, ready to help you pursue your interests. So when it comes to additional opportunities for involvement, what are you looking for?
