Designed to explore the fundamental concepts of physics; principle topics covered include both static and dynamic mechanics and thermodynamics. Note: Students cannot receive credit for both PHYS 1401 and PHYS 2401. Lecture three hours, laboratory three hours. $90 fee. Prerequisite: MATH 1305 (Trigonometry). Required Textbook: *Refer to official booklist Supplies: composition book (for lab), scientific calculator, protractor Course Outline/Outcome Competencies: You should be familiar with the following topics and be able to use them to set up and solve mathematical models of real-world problems. Intro and Math Concepts Kinematics Dynamics and Laws of Motion Circulation Motion; Gravitation Work and Energy Momentum Rotational Motion Statics Fluids Vibrations, Waves and Sound Temperature, Kinetic Theory, Heat, and Thermodynamics Attendance Requirements: Missing class 8 times should result in failure. You are responsible for any material missed. Please get notes from a classmate. No quizzes may be made up, unless absence was arranged for in advance. If you miss class for a Wayland activity, it will not count against you IF I receive a note from you with your name, the date and reason of absence, and your signature, NO LATER than the class period after the absence. (Concurrent students: similar for your school) Note that homework must be turned in early or sent to class with someone else or it is late, and possibly not accepted. One absence or less earns 3 pt bonus, two absences = 2pt bonus Statement on Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty: Wayland Baptist University observes a zero tolerance policy regarding academic dishonesty. Course Requirements and Grading Criteria: suggested Tests: (40%) There will be three tests and a final exam, which are weighted equally Homework: (25%) Homework may consist of both problems assigned from the book and other assignments such as a paper, library research, or finding internet sites. All homework will be due at a specified time, and will be reduced in grade if it is late. Chapter homework will be due when specified on the schedule, it may be turned in earlier. After homework is turned in, I plan to post solutions- no homework will be accepted after solutions are posted. If you are absent, please contact me before the class period when the assignment is due to see if it is possible to delay posting of solutions. Labs: (20%) All labs will be written as you do them into your lab composition notebook. Include the title and date, who you worked with, a sketch or description, brief procedure, and all data taken. Calculations for labs must be done in class before you leave, and a conclusion written. Have the instructor mark your notebook before you leave lab. It is possible that final exam questions may require the use of your notebook. No loose pages may be stuck in the notebook. Quizzes: (15%) Quizzes may be over assigned reading and on concept understanding. They may be given any day. A: 90 – 100 B: 80 – 89 C: 70 – 79 D: 60 – 69 F: Below 60 Students shall have protection through orderly procedures against prejudices or capricious academic evaluation. A student who believes that he or she has not been held to realistic academic standards, just evaluation procedures, or appropriate grading, may appeal the final grade given in the course by using the student grade appeal process described in the Academic Catalog. Appeals may not be made for advanced placement examinations or course bypass examinations. Appeals are limited to the final course grade, which may be upheld, raised, or lowered at any stage of the appeal process. Any recommendation to lower a course grade must be submitted through the Executive Vice President/Provost to the Faculty Assembly Grade Appeals Committee for review and approval. The Faculty Assembly Grade Appeals Committee may instruct that the course grade be upheld, raised, or lowered to a more proper evaluation. Tentative Schedule: Academic Honesty: Disciplinary action for academic misconduct is the responsibility of the faculty member assigned to this course. The faculty member is charged with assessing the gravity of any case of academic dishonesty, and with giving sanctions to any student involved. In this course, any student caught cheating will receive a zero on that work. Any second instance of cheating will result in failure of the course.
