Members interests
Research was done by independent consultant
What is important for the IFRF Members?
1. experimentally based research
at a reasonable scale
(semi-industrial scale)
2. network activities

IFRF strategic repositioning
1.
Focus on IFRF members´ needs and requirements
•
2.
Improved cooperation with NCs
•
•
3.
We need to listen to you
We need keep our dialogue running
Improved transparency of our operations
Improved access to technical materials for all members
•
•
Revamp of the website

Rigs at Livorno
• FOSPER (FOrnace SPERimentale)
(Furnace #1)
• Isothermal plug flow reactor (IPFR)
• Downdraft Gasifier and
biorefinery (University of Pisa)
• 500 KWT Furnace
• Atomisation rig/ spray
characterisation
• Aerodynamic lab. for “cold”
characterisation
• Optical Diagnostic lab.
• CASPER (6.5 MWt boiler for liquid/gas
burners)
• SPLIT (0.5-2 MWt gas turbine combustor,
atmospheric)
• TAO (Turbina Accesso Ottico)

IFRF probes
•
Review in-flame and in furnace measurement
techniques
IFRF probes:
•
•
Based on early ‘60s design
Still widely used for industrial
combustion tests
Today needs:
•
•
•
•
Quantify uncertainties
Update/upgrade instrumentation (HW/SW)
Adapt probes to new combustion concepts (oxy-combustion, FLOX)
Develop new concept measurements- example.:
• Suction probe for in-flame FTIR – minor species
• Flame fluctuations - ODC

RELCOM project – Oxy/fuel combustion
The programme of the experimentation is conceptually divided in two
phases:
•
i) Experiments with the existing low-NOX burners (IFRF AASB,
TEA C), with the objectives to obtain a characterization of the
combustion process with oxygen and recycled flue gas, with both
natural gas and coal as fuels, and to produce data sets for
modelling validation;
•
ii) Tests with new designed oxy-coal burners with the objectives
to verify the criteria adopted in the design phase and to develop a
better understanding in the procedure of designing an oxy-coal
burner
15
BRISK project – biomass utilisation
•
Characterisation of biofuels
•
Establish protocols for solid fuels
combustion characterisation
•
Characterise solid (and liquid) fuels
• to agreed protocols
• to fill data gaps for numerical model
validation & application
• includes fuels that are environmentally and
economically significant
• Biomass, Wastes, Blends with coals
• In atmospheres that reflect O2/RFG
approach, temperatures and pressures of
current interest to members and other
sponsors
IFRF Solid Fuel Database- http://sfdb.ifrf.net
(Collaboration with Åbo Academy for data analysis)
16
BRISK / EFRI test rigs network
Share test rigs between partners
•
•
BRISK partners
Also others via Transnational Access
Propose Protocols for sharing experimental data
•
•
Create inventory of ‘shareable’ data (IFRF,
Members, Others)
Populate the IFRF on-line Archive
and solid fuel database
Establish Multi-partner programme to:
•
•
Develop and agree criteria for validating
(quantify uncertainties) mathematical models
Apply the criteria across a range of models,
processes and fuels
