June, 2012 MSCI Monthly Newsletter In This Issue TAS Meeting Geology Field Trips From the "Herb-arium" Dr. Herb Grover, Dean School of Mathematics and Sciences ACS Conference San Diego MAA Community Outreach End of year achievements Faculty Profile Greetings! Community outreach and student travel are among the distinctives of our academic program. Along with many notable community outreach efforts, this issue of our newsletter highlights field trips and trips to scientific meetings that have taken place over the past few months. From Dallas, Alpine, and Lubbock, Texas; to San Diego, CA; Oklahoma; Arkansas; and South Dakota - Wayland students and faculty continue to make their mark in the world of science and mathematics, and through those experiences our presentations to various schools and homeschool groups in our region are further enriched. Student oral and poster presentations at the Texas Tech Biology Research Symposium won first and second place awards; our presentations at the Texas Academy of Sciences meetings in Alpine were very close to top placings in a large and impressive field of contenders; and our posters at the American Chemical Society meetings in San Diego affirmed that our undergraduate research program is on par with many of the larger universities in the U.S.! Dr. Andrew Kasner Associate Professor - Biology Dr. Kasner received a B.S. in Biology from Angelo State University in 1995, an M.S. in Biology from Angelo State University in 1999, and Ph.D. in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from Texas A&M University in 2004. Dr. Kasner was previously on the biology faculty at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX and worked for the National Audubon Society as the Director of Bird It takes great commitment and some sacrifice on the part of faculty and students for these community outreach and travel experiences to be successful. In other words - it takes a sense of purpose! Our faculty understand how valuable it is for our students to see and experience creation directly through extended field trips, and we also know that our students benefit greatly from realizing that what we do through our community outreach, field and laboratory research programs helps them stand out when they apply for graduate school or professional programs. Finally, the process of planning, conducting, and participating in community outreach, field trips and other travel experiences builds a sense of community among faculty and students that is priceless. But there is more! As I write this note (first week of June 2012), Dr. Schmidt and Dr. Walsh are leading a field trip of 6 students to South Dakota where they are collecting paleontological specimens through a permit Dr. Schmidt recently acquired through the Park Service. Their collections will be Conservation for Audubon Texas. He joined the faculty at Wayland in Fall 2009. Dr. Kasner teaches courses in introductory biology, invertebrate biology, vertebrate biology, conservation, and field biology. Later in July, Dr. Kasner will be leading a week-long field trip to the Rockport-Fulton, TX area to collect and study invertebrates. (He is allowing his dean to come along on that trip to see if there are a few plants of interest as well!) All of these are unique opportunities for our students to grow and excel in their chosen career paths! Finally, in an earlier newsletter we announced the need for monetary assistance to help defray the in-country expenses for a planned field course to Kenya next summer. We have had donors make contributions to this effort - but we are far from the amount we will need to make this happen. If we can raise $30,000, we project that we would be able to take 10 students to Kenya for a three-four week field course that would not only be rich in academic content, but would be life-changing for all involved through the mission opportunities we will fold into the trip. If you are interested in helping with this effort, please let me know (groverh@wbu.edu), or you may contact Dr. Kasner as well (kasnera@wbu.edu). As I repeat many times, we are truly blessed to serve Him through Wayland. Founded by a faithful and adventurous frontier doctor, we continue to be bold in our willingness to reach out and share His light with the world through our study of God's creation and by sharing our discoveries with our community. Their travels also included the Quartz Mountain State Park, Wildlife Refuge, Chickasaw National Recreation Area and Turner Falls Park. The students collected rock specimens and examined the structural deformations. March 28th-April 1st Historical Geology took a group of students through central Texas, collecting rock samples and fossils at several locations. Included in the rock specimen collected was llanite, which is found only in Texas and contains blue quartz. The group visited Fluvanna, Coleman Brick, Hoover Point, Enchanted Rock State Park, the Llano Uplift region and kayaked to view the outcrops at Inks Lake. ACS Trip to San Diego On March 24th through the 27th, Dr. Gray and Dr. Reinhart took Stephanie Whitaker, Jessica Kenneson, Taylor Eaves, Trevor Burrow, Libby Saultz, and Hailey Budnick to the 243rd ACS national meeting in San Diego, CA. To help pay for the trip the SCACS held a cookie sale and game night fundraiser which raised over $2,500. Trevor Burrow presented a research poster on Partial purifaction and characterization of 4T1 murine breast cancer cell cytotoxins from Curcuma longa. Libby Saultz also presented a poster on Cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of Zingiber officinalea (ginger root), Curcuma longa (turmeric), Trigonella foenumgraecum (fenugreek) Sanguinaria Canadensis (bloodroot), and Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) in 4T1 murine and MCF-7 human breast cancer cell lines. In addition to meetings, the students spent some free time at the San Diego zoo and other attractions of San Diego. MAA Trip to 92nd Annual Meeting of the Texas Section in Dallas, TX On April 12-14, 2012, Dr. Hahn and Dr. Emilia Moore took Trevor Burrow, Richard Ross, Richard Ralston, Anna Kite, Tami Patterson, Suzi Guenther, Brian Adamson, to The Texas Section of the MAA Spring Meeting hosted by El Centro College. Richard Ross gave a 15 minute talk presenting his undergraduate research under the direction of Dr. E. Moore. Trevor, Richard Ralston, Anna, Tami and Brian participated in a Calculus Bowl Competition. Students attended numerous talks given by undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and invited speaker presentations. Community Outreach High School Tutoring As a volunteer effort to strengthen the mathematical skills of local high school students, Rick Ross, Trevor Burrow, Libby Saultz, Tami Patterson, and Anna Kite, have been providing free math tutoring at Plainview HS to students in academic d-hall. These students are members of Wayland's Student Chapter of the Mathematical Association of America. They visited the HS for one hour from 4pm to 5pm on Wednesday afternoon and tutored students struggling with mathematics. March 3rd Culmination of Texas Public School Week at Coronado Jr. High School The school of mathematics and science took 9 students and 4 faculty comprising of biology, mathematics, and chemistry to Coronado Jr. High to help engage student's interests in math and science. The Wayland students put on different demonstrations in three class rooms for three periods. The biology students showed students how to extract DNA from strawberries teaching the students the simple method of extracting DNA, the necessity of following each step because of the complex organization of DNA cells, and observing how DNA is even in the food that we eat. The math students and faculty demonstrated several math "tricks" including guessing a randomly selected word from a dictionary within 20 attempts. Chemistry students and faculty showed how with the knowledge of chemistry you can perform what looks to be magic tricks. They were even able to recreate some of the "spells" seen on the well-known Harry Potter. Research Presentation at Trinity Christian High School, May 3, 2012 Trevor Burrow, President of the SCACS, gave a research presentation to Ms. Janet Kitten's AP Chemistry class, followed by a round-table discussion. Attendees: Dr. Robert Moore, Jessica Kenneson, Hailey Budnick, Taylor Eaves, Trevor Burrow, Dr. Gary Gray The Plainview Area homeschool chemistry enhancement program at Wayland Baptist University Through this program, area high school students who are currently homeschooled attend twice monthly laboratory sessions at Wayland that are tailored to supplement and enhance the chemistry curriculum studied at home. The PAHCEP program in no way replaces home-based instruction; but the addition of laboratory exercises will greatly enhance the text-based studies. There is no better way to learn and understand chemistry than by doing it.
