Unit Name: Student Life – Office of Multicultural Affairs Unit Mission: ESF Multicultural Affairs exists to support underrepresented students and to foster a campus community where cultural diversity is appreciated. The Office seeks to be a center of cultural learning that prepares all members of the ESF community to effectively interact with others in an increasingly diverse and global society. People attend for these reasons in the following order: presentation topic, speaker/presenter, course requirement, free food. Heritage Month Celebration Displays Numerous students visit the office daily – 15 on average, whereas few faculty & staff visit – about 5 monthly, and for purely business matters. AIDS Quilt 28 patches added yearly, mostly by students, a few staff, virtually no faculty. Cultural Book Club More student participants, 3-4 staff participants – fluctuates, no faculty, ------------------------------------------------SERVICES Language Bank Used by faculty about 2 times per year, Communication Office occasionally uses. Heritage Month Celebration Displays - Host a free “Hot Beverage and Pastry Hour” focusing on the culture being celebrated - 8-9 AM (a time when fewer students stop by but when faculty and staff are around) one day per week during the month. AIDS Quilt -Personally invite faculty and staff -Have a feedback sheet at display in the Rotunda Cultural Book Club -Personally invite faculty and staff -Continue to hold these after work at 4:30 -------------------------------------------------SERVICES Language Bank -Advertise more -Utilize volunteers more Cultural Resources Lending Service 30 Books, 5 DVDs yearly. Largest group are students, then staff/faculty. Through an array of programs and services, Multicultural Affairs helps recruit and support underrepresented students in their endeavors at ESF. Goal 1: Enrich academic excellence in both undergraduate and graduate education. CSTEP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program) Year-end evaluations, Survey Monkey online evaluation – December 2009 Goal 2: Provide an outstanding student experience. Academic/Career Workshops (for CSTEP Credit) Attendance records, for students in CSTEP particularly Goal 3: Be the “go-to” institution with a strong and visible reputation Pre-Orientation Annual end of program evaluations and focus groups. Longitudinal, Survey Monkey online evaluation fall 2009spring 2010 Graduate Diversity Fellows Program Track persistence with program and graduation rates CSTEP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program) 97% of those who took the survey expressed satisfaction with the program Academic/Career Workshops - CSTEP Attendance for Multicultural Affairs hosted workshops remained on average at 17 out of 50 eligible CSTEP students. Average attendance at other Student Life academic/career events was about 2-3. Pre-Orientation - From 2004-2009, there were 85 Pre-O participants -The retention and graduation rate of Pre-O participants was 72% -Student gave a 4.5 out of 5 rating for overall satisfaction, presenters, bonding, learning activities, and recreation. -Students would increase the amount of time outdoors Graduate Diversity Fellows Program All Fellows except one graduated from ESF since 2003. Cultural Resources Lending Service -Advertise more -Put out a “suggestion box” CSTEP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program) -Intentionally recruit students at the Admissions Office Accepted Student Receptions – might help students “seal the deal” to enroll at ESF when they see strong CSTEP program (as happened at Morrisville) Academic/Career Workshops -CSTEP -Increase variety of topics offered, especially for upperclassmen and graduate CSTEP students -Stagger the times and weekdays of offerings Pre-Orientation -Allow more ‘down time’ outdoors -Intentionally recruit students at the Admissions Office Accepted Student Receptions – might help students “seal the deal” to enroll at ESF Graduate Diversity Fellows Program -Recruit more vigorously for spring semesters when December graduates leave spaces open.
