Office of the Registrar RN‐BSN Program Distance Learning Orientation Introduction: Greetings and welcome to Winston‐Salem State University. My name is Carmen Wigfall and I am the Associate Registrar for Registration, Classroom Assignments, and Technical Support. The Office of the Registrar is the repository of student records from the point of enrollment to the conferring of degrees and beyond. Over the next few minutes we will discuss a few topics that will help you navigate the processes within the Office of the Registrar. These include: 1. How to navigate the WSSU Office of the Registrar website. 2. How to navigate and use your Banner RAMS account to add/drop courses. 3. How to view the Academic Calendar for critical dates. 4. How to change your address/name/etc. 5. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) 1. Office of the Registrar Website Tour: (screen shot of WSSU home page) Our website is extremely informative and covers a wide range of services that are offered to students faculty, and members of the administration. You can locate us under the heading of Registrar. Information on our telephone and fax number and office email is also found on the web site. So let’s get started: To access WSSU’s registrar website, click on Administration on the WSSU website, then Registrar (screen shot of the page http://www.wssu.edu/administration/registrar/default.asp). To the right and left of the screen you will see a variety of helpful links. However, for this presentation we will focus on the Information and Resources link. Here you will find information for 
Registration ‐ learn about the registration process, see deadlines, register for classes, view grades and more (screen shot of the page http://www.wssu.edu/administration/registrar/registrar‐
pages/registration.aspx). 
Registration Checklist – some items on the checklist may not apply to RN/BSN applicants (screen shot of the page http://www.wssu.edu/administration/registrar/registrar‐forms/20112012f025 registrationchecklist.pdf. 2. Now let’s navigate to Banner RAMS Online to complete the Registration process. Once a student has been accepted into the University, a letter of acceptance will be sent via US mail providing a Banner ID number and other information needed for registration. New students should attend Orientation prior to the start of the semester, meet with an Academic Advisor and register for courses. It is important that new students take time to read the acceptance letter carefully as well as any other literature received from Winston‐Salem State University for more details and information. You must login to Banner RAMS Online to access to your personalized student information (screen shot of this page http://www.wssu.edu/administration/registrar/registrar‐forms/20112012f025 registrationchecklist.pdf). Then select “Banner RAMS Online”. Click: “Enter Secure Area”, Type in your Banner ID and your 6‐digit password. (Word Doc instructions) 3. The Academic Calendar should be viewed before and during a semester (screen shot of the page http://www.calendarwiz.com/calendars/calendar.php?crd=wssu&op=cal&month=1&year=2015). The Academic Calendar provides an overview of the university’s official academic calendar at a glance and includes information such as first and last day of class, course/university dates, grades dates, holidays, etc. 4. How to change you address (screen shot of the page http://www.wssu.edu/administration/registrar/registrar‐forms/20112012f006changeaddress.pdf). Communication from the University is sent to the address provided as your permanent address upon enrollment to Winston‐Salem State. The correct mailing address is critical to receive information in a timely manner. If your permanent and/or local address changes, please complete the Change of Address form as soon as possible and submit to the Office of the Registrar. 5. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (screen shot of the page http://www.wssu.edu/administration/registrar/registrar‐forms/ferpa‐release‐form.pdf). FERPA is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students." In accordance with FERPA, it is Winston‐Salem State University’s policy to withhold certain educational records unless the student provides consent to disclose information. The purpose of the FERPA form is to provide the consent to Winston‐Salem State University required by FERPA. Students must therefore complete the FERPA form to authorize Winston‐Salem State University administrators to release/discuss specified educational records and information. The completed FERPA form must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar. One final note about FERPA policy, some information can be released without student consent. This is called Directory Information. Directory information at Winston‐Salem State University includes (show list). Unless a student places a confidentiality hold on their record, directory information can be released without their consent. For more information on FERPA regulations please visit our website at: http://www.wssu.edu/administration/registrar/ferpa.aspx. Closing Remarks: As mentioned above, the Office of the Registrar website is informative and covers other topics such as: how to calculate your GPA; request an official transcript; how to apply for graduation; how to view course/university withdrawal policies, etc. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the website to view the extensive services offered by the Office of the Registrar.
