OVERVIEW OF PROJECT
A. Problem
As lead instructor, instructor of regular classroom sections, and the course developer and instructor of the web
section of Principles of Accounting I (ACCT 1010); I have observed the following:
1. More sections are being offered to meet demand requiring the utilization of more adjuncts. It is difficult to
find adjuncts with the required 18 graduate hours in accounting and relevant teaching experience.
2. Since most adjuncts also have full-time jobs, it is not possible for them to observe individuals experienced
in teaching ACCT 1010.
3. Student requests for tutoring have increased. The needs of students at site campuses are often not satisfied
due to tutor availability. In addition, the tutoring needs of evening students are often unmet.
4. Students that regularly attend class often have difficultly understanding complex course topics.
5. The success rate of students in the web section of the course is lower than for those in regular classroom
sections. Students’ with an oral learning style often self-select enrollment in this section.
6. Students with disabilities often need additional assistance with course concepts.
7. Students that do not adequately learn the basics of accounting have a difficult time recovering and being
successful in the course since this material is built upon throughout the semester.
8. Students find the course to be difficult and will utilize any additional examples that I develop and make
available to them to learn course material.
B. Proposal to Address the Problem
Through the development of course videos of various complex topics encountered in ACCT 1010, using
Camtasia Studio and Closed Captioning, the following problems can be addressed:
1. Adjuncts will be provided with training related to best practices in teaching the course.
2. Students in regular classroom sections needing tutoring or that are having a difficult time with a selected
course topic can be provided with the ability to review a specific topic.
3. Students at site campuses will be provided with additional assistance. Evening students will have an
opportunity for assistance that meets the flexibility their schedules demand.
4. Students in the web section will be provided with mini-lectures and examples.
5. Students with disabilities will be provided with an opportunity to review course material.
6. Students that do not adequately learn the basics of accounting will be able to review these topics.
These videos will not be a complete classroom lecture but will instead focus on selected topics taught in the
course that students often have a difficult time understanding. They will not be a substitute for attending class.
To maximize their utilization each video will be made available to all ACCT 1010 instructors (full-time and
adjunct), tutors and SI leaders. In addition, all videos will be a maximum of 20 minutes in length and
approximately 20 videos will be scripted and edited. To ensure future usage, no video will be tied to a specific
textbook. To emphasize this stand-alone concept, topical problem examples will be created for use in many of
the videos developed. For continuous access, all videos developed will be posted on YouTube and linked to my
supplemental course websites in D2L.
C. Specific Improvements Expected in the Learning Environment
Through the development of these content specific course videos tied to difficult accounting topics:
1. The learning curve for adjuncts will be reduced increasing success rates in these sections.
2. Access to tutoring will be extended to evening and site-campus sections increasing success.
3. Access to tutoring and mini-lectures will be extended to the web section increasing success.
4. The effectiveness of tutors will be increased since these videos can be used to refresh skills.
5. Overall success will be increased since students can review concepts as necessary.
ADDITIONAL PROJECT INFORMATION AND RATIONALE
A. Consistency of the Project with its Purpose
As an accounting instructor at Pellissippi State for 22 years I have gained significant knowledge related to
student success and providing tools to supplement the textbook and classroom experience.
1 B. Direct Linkage with Business Administration Goals
This project will satisfy the following goals of the Business Administration Department:
I.
Apply the basic principles of Business Administration.
III. Identify problems and use appropriate techniques to find solutions.
V.
Demonstrate basic math, verbal and written communication and computer skills
C. How this Proposal Supports Cost Efficiency, Number of Students Effected, Self- Sustaining Features
of Project
Approximately 280 students fall 2013 enrolled in sections of ACCT 1010 taught by myself and adjuncts will be
the primary beneficiaries of this project. This will extend to approximately 750 students enrolled in the course
throughout 2014 when the videos are made available to all full-time instructors and tutors. Student utilization of
these videos could also potentially reduce the number of tutoring hours required in the course resulting in cost
savings to the college. Since these videos will be course content and not textbook specific, they will be
sustainable for use in all ACCT 1010 courses for the foreseeable future.
PROJECT EVALUATION
A. Qualitative/quantitative evidence of achievement
1. Comparisons between success rates of regular classroom sections that I teach during fall 2013 with regular
classroom sections taught by myself since fall 2012 when TBR mandated changes were implemented.
2. Comparisons between the success rates of the web section of the course during fall semester 2013 versus
those taught during fall 2012 and spring 2013.
3. Comparisons of the success rates of any ACCT 1010 courses taught by first-time adjuncts during fall 2013
versus those taught since fall 2012.
4. Survey developed for analysis of videos identified as utilized by students and adjuncts.
B. Time Frame for Project Completion and Presentation
This request is being proposed for fall 2013. Based on student and adjunct comments solicited all videos can be
edited using Camtasia Studio (this editing process is not permitted using Camtasia Relay). Since I would like to
compare the success rates of selected fall 2013 sections versus previous semesters results of this project would
be presented to my supervisor and the IDC committee at the beginning of spring semester 2014.
