Over the course of the four meetings, 7 - 10 members attended representing students, teachers, administrators, and community members (including School Board representatives, clergy, and health professionals). The committee was served by a parliamentarian. Locker 572 – chapter excerpts 1 Grade 4 Recommendations Recommended Instructional Materials for Grade 4 Human Growth and Development FLECAC recommends the following special instructional materials. Descriptions, corresponding objectives, and committee votes are noted. Boardmaker Picture Index sexuality pictures for use in grade 4 Human Growth and Development lessons that are specifically designed for students with low incidence disabilities. Boardmaker Picture Index sexuality pictures are currently approved for use in modified lessons for grades 512. Pictures recommended for use in the grade 4 modified lessons and example power point slides are provided in Appendix B for context. Boardmaker Picture Index (Mayer-Johnson Company), is a graphics database containing over 3,000 Picture Communication Symbols (from PCS Books I, II, & III) in bitmapped clip art form. Currently, Boardmaker is being used by Category “B” teachers to create visual learning activities, worksheets, checklists and other supplementary materials in order to reinforce learning when working with special education students. Using visual strategies supports student learning by reinforcing comprehension. Recommended for grade 4 Human Growth and Development modified lessons to address: 4.1 (Gender Separate): The student will recognize the physical changes that occur during puberty and relate these changes to the increased need for personal hygiene. Descriptive Statement: Instruction includes the following physical changes: growth spurt, increased sweat production, skin changes, mood swings, growth of pubic and underarm hair, increase shoulder width in boys, and breast and hip development in girls. In addition, the importance of personal hygiene in relation to these bodily changes is discussed. Instruction for girls includes basic anatomy of the female reproductive system, menstruation, and the intended use and proper disposal of sanitary products. Instruction for boys includes basic anatomy of the male reproductive system, erections, and nocturnal emissions. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the onset of sexual changes and growth patterns varies with individuals and that this is natural. Focus is on the development of a positive attitude toward oneself during puberty and appreciation for individual differences. 2 Grade 5 Recommendations Recommended Media for Grade 5 Human Growth and Development FLECAC recommends the following media. Just Around the Corner for Boys, Marsh Media (2011), 10:50 minutes Note: will be shown to boys only Younger elementary-level boys will appreciate this upbeat look at the changes of puberty. New narration and photography with lighthearted animated figures prepare boys for the momentous changes waiting “just around the corner.” These important topics are introduced: • When to expect the onset of puberty • The physical and emotional changes of puberty • The maturation of the male reproductive system • Common experiences of puberty, including voice changes, feelings of physical awkwardness, and nocturnal emissions • The importance of good hygiene and healthy habits • Maintaining health through good nutrition and exercise Recommended for grade 5 Human Growth and Development to address: 5.1 (Gender-separate): The student will recognize the physical changes that occur during puberty and relate these changes to the increased need for personal hygiene. Just Around the Corner for Girls, Marsh Media (2011), 14:23 minutes Note: Companion media that will be shown to girls only This reassuring presentation includes the same cheerful theme song and clearly illustrated biology, enhanced with new narration and photography to help prepare your younger elementarylevel girls for all of the changes ahead. Topics covered in this lively program include • When to expect the onset of puberty • The physical and emotional changes of puberty • The maturation of the female reproductive system • Menstruation • The importance of good hygiene and healthy habits • Maintaining health through good nutrition and exercise 3 We’re Growing Up, Marsh Media (2010), 11:00 minutes A co-educational program designed for both boys and girls. The narrators talk comfortably and matter-of-factly about human growth. Presentation covers growth patterns (starting with a baby’s rapid growth in the womb) and move quickly through childhood to adolescence. A review of male and female anatomy, sexual development, and an emphasis on responsible choices will be points for classroom discussion. Recommended for grade 5 Human Growth and Development to address: 5.2 (Gender Separate): The student will identify the structures and functions of the male and female reproductive systems. Descriptive Statement: The emphasis is on understanding the functions of the male and female reproductive organs, including the penis, testicles, vasa deferensa, scrotum, urethra, uterus, ovaries, vagina, and fallopian tubes. The reproductive organs are explained in relation to the total human anatomy. 4 Grade 6 Recommendations Recommended Media for Grade 6 Human Growth and Development FLECAC recommends the following media. Descriptions, corresponding objectives, and committee votes are noted. Straight Talk About Puberty for Boys, Marsh Media (2012) 17:30 minutes Note: Media title will be shown to boys only. Companion to the program for girls, but designed to be shown to boys alone, this DVD is equally clean and fresh in its approach. Some new, and appropriate, material just for boys is included in this new title. Boys in this grade range will learn about: • The male reproductive system • Hygiene and good grooming • The dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs to growing bodies • Emotional and physical changes of puberty • Importance of exercise and good nutrition Straight Talk About Puberty For Boys will help answer many of those important, but often not asked, questions that maturing boys always have. Recommended for grade 6 Human Growth and Development to address: 6.1 (Gender Separate): The student will explore the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur during puberty and relate personal hygiene to these changes. Descriptive Statement: This includes a review of physiological changes introduced in fifth grade and a brief examination of psychological and social changes, including mood swings, changing family and peer relationships, and increasing interest in romantic relationships. Ways to cope with these changes are addressed, including proper diet, exercise, and talking with a trusted adult such as an adult family member, teacher, counselor, or member of the clergy. The relationship among bodily changes, good personal hygiene and positive interactions with others is emphasized. Girls only review the use and proper disposal of sanitary napkins and tampons. 6.2 (Gender Separate): The student will review the structures and functions of the male and female reproductive systems and how these change during puberty. Descriptive Statement: Instruction includes the structure and function of the reproductive organs, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina in girls, and the testicles, vasa deferensa, urethra, penis, and scrotum in boys. 6.5 (Gender Separate): The student will identify reasons for avoiding premarital sexual intercourse. Descriptive Statement: Instruction includes exploration of the physical, psychological, social, academic, spiritual, and financial consequences of premarital sexual intercourse. The benefits of sexual abstinence in supporting healthy adolescent development are emphasized, and students review and practice using refusal skills in situations related to adolescent development. 5 Straight Talk About Puberty for Girls: Marsh Media (2012) 20:00 minutes Note: Companion media to boys’ title; will be shown to girls only As an alternative to story-driven programs, this new title is streamlined and trimmed down to “just the facts” – which makes it slightly shorter, and definitely crisper and more to the point. Girls in this grade range will learn about • The female reproductive system • Hygiene and good grooming • The dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs to growing bodies • Emotional and physical changes of puberty • Importance of exercise and good nutrition 6 Grade 8 Recommendations Recommended Media for Grade 8 Human Growth and Development Human Reproduction and Childbirth (edited for FCPS), Human Relations Media (2010), 21:00 minutes Using animated graphics, this program clearly and vividly illustrates the biological functions of the different parts of the male and female reproductive systems. It shows how millions of sperm race through the uterus and into the fallopian tube where fertilization occurs, and subsequently how the fertilized egg develops into an embryo. Program also describes the basics of menstruation. Animated graphics vividly detail the different stages or trimesters of embryonic and fetal development. The program also follows a young couple through the woman’s pregnancy, as both husband and wife describe the importance of good nutrition, sleep, low stress, and avoidance of alcohol and drugs. The process of birth is described as a young couple talks about their joy at the birth of their baby daughter. Recommended for grade 8 Human Growth and Development to address: 8.2 (Gender Separate): The student will examine and describe the process of human reproduction. Descriptive Statement: Topics include ovulation, fertilization, implantation, prenatal development, and childbirth. Instruction includes the stages of labor and types of deliveries. It is emphasized that the physical ability to conceive a child comes before psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social readiness. Recommended Print for Grade 8 Emotional and Social Health Kodzo, L. T. (2011). Locker 572 – chapter excerpts (chapters 1 and 2 for teacher use; chapters 6, 8, 11, 15, 18, 20, 25, 30, 35, 38, 41, 44, 50, 54, 61, and 62 for student use) Note: This book is provided as a separate attachment to the report. Author has given permission to use the print material and post electronically for teacher use. Sheridan Alexander moves to San Diego and her fifth foster home since kindergarten. Her two goals are to graduate and exit the system without any more trouble. That is, until she is assigned locker 572 and finds the abandoned journal of Ribbon Barber. The journal pages reveal the endless insults and abuse flung at an innocent girl. "Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you.” Yeah, right. Words of hate scar forever. Sheridan needs to find Ribbon and protect her before it is too late, even if it means giving up her most stable home in years. Ribbon has a right to be left alone. But can anyone ever be safe in the hardened halls of high school? Recommended for grade 8 Emotional and Social Health to address: 8.4 The student will describe the symptoms of depression and identify clinical depression as a leading factor in suicide. Descriptive Statement: This includes the relationship between the changes of adolescence and depression, the difference between feeling depressed and experiencing clinical depression, the warning signs of depression and suicide, and sources of help. 7 APPENDIX A Boardmaker Picture Index Sexuality Pictures 8 Boardmaker Picture Index (Mayer-Johnson Company), is a graphics database containing over 3,000 Picture Communication Symbols (from PCS Books I, II, & III) in bitmapped clip art form. Currently, Boardmaker sexuality pictures have been approved for use in the grades 5-12 modified Human Growth and Development lessons for students with low incidence disabilities. Pictures below are a subset of the pictures approved previously and will be used to design lessons for grade 4 students with low incidence disabilities, who because of their disability, are not able to access the general education Human Growth and Development puberty lesson.
