Grade 4 Recommendations
Recommended Instructional Materials for
Grade 4 Human Growth and Development
FLECAC recommends the following special instructional materials. Descriptions, corresponding
objectives, and committee votes are noted.
Boardmaker Picture Index sexuality pictures for use in grade 4 Human Growth and Development
lessons that are specifically designed for students with low incidence disabilities. Boardmaker
Picture Index sexuality pictures are currently approved for use in modified lessons for grades 512. Pictures recommended for use in the grade 4 modified lessons and example power point
slides are provided in Appendix B for context.
Boardmaker Picture Index (Mayer-Johnson Company), is a graphics database containing over
3,000 Picture Communication Symbols (from PCS Books I, II, & III) in bitmapped clip art form.
Currently, Boardmaker is being used by Category “B” teachers to create visual learning activities,
worksheets, checklists and other supplementary materials in order to reinforce learning when
working with special education students. Using visual strategies supports student learning by
reinforcing comprehension.
Recommended for grade 4 Human Growth and Development modified lessons to
address:
4.1 (Gender Separate): The student will recognize the physical changes that occur
during puberty and relate these changes to the increased need for personal
hygiene.
Descriptive Statement: Instruction includes the following physical changes: growth
spurt, increased sweat production, skin changes, mood swings, growth of pubic and
underarm hair, increase shoulder width in boys, and breast and hip development in girls.
In addition, the importance of personal hygiene in relation to these bodily changes is
discussed. Instruction for girls includes basic anatomy of the female reproductive
system, menstruation, and the intended use and proper disposal of sanitary products.
Instruction for boys includes basic anatomy of the male reproductive system, erections,
and nocturnal emissions. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the onset of sexual
changes and growth patterns varies with individuals and that this is natural. Focus is on
the development of a positive attitude toward oneself during puberty and appreciation for
individual differences.

Grade 5 Recommendations
Recommended Media for Grade 5 Human Growth and Development
FLECAC recommends the following media. Descriptions, corresponding objectives, and
committee votes are noted.
Just Around the Corner for Boys, Marsh Media (2011), 10:50 minutes
Note: will be shown to boys only
Younger elementary-level boys will appreciate this upbeat look at the changes of puberty. New
narration and photography with lighthearted animated figures prepare boys for the momentous
changes waiting “just around the corner.” These important topics are introduced:
• When to expect the onset of puberty
• The physical and emotional changes of puberty
• The maturation of the male reproductive system
• Common experiences of puberty, including voice changes, feelings of physical
awkwardness, and nocturnal emissions
• The importance of good hygiene and healthy habits
• Maintaining health through good nutrition and exercise
Recommended for grade 5 Human Growth and Development to address:
5.1 (Gender-separate): The student will recognize the physical changes that
occur during puberty and relate these changes to the increased need for
personal hygiene.
Descriptive Statement: Instruction includes the following physical changes: growth spurt,
increased sweat production, skin changes, mood swings, growth of pubic and underarm
hair, increased shoulder width in boys and breast and hip development in girls,
menstruation, erections, and nocturnal emissions. Although instruction for boys includes
brief mention of sanitary products during instruction about menstruation, girls only are
taught about the intended use and proper disposal of sanitary napkins and tampons.
Focus is on the development of a positive attitude toward oneself during puberty, an
appreciation for individual differences, and an understanding of the relationship between
changes that occur during puberty and the ability to conceive and bear children.

We’re Growing Up, Marsh Media (2010), 11:00 minutes
A co-educational program designed for both boys and girls. The narrators talk comfortably and
matter-of-factly about human growth. Presentation covers growth patterns (starting with a baby’s
rapid growth in the womb) and move quickly through childhood to adolescence. A review of male
and female anatomy, sexual development, and an emphasis on responsible choices will be points
for classroom discussion.

Grade 6 Recommendations
Recommended Media for Grade 6 Human Growth and Development
FLECAC recommends the following media. Descriptions, corresponding objectives, and
committee votes are noted.
Straight Talk About Puberty for Boys, Marsh Media (2012) 17:30 minutes
Note: Media title will be shown to boys only.
Companion to the program for girls, but designed to be shown to boys alone, this DVD is equally
clean and fresh in its approach. Some new, and appropriate, material just for boys is included in
this new title. Boys in this grade range will learn about:
• The male reproductive system
• Hygiene and good grooming
• The dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs to growing bodies
• Emotional and physical changes of puberty
• Importance of exercise and good nutrition
Straight Talk About Puberty For Boys will help answer many of those important, but often not
asked, questions that maturing boys always have.
Recommended for grade 6 Human Growth and Development to address:
6.1 (Gender Separate): The student will explore the physical, emotional, and social
changes that occur during puberty and relate personal hygiene to these changes.
Descriptive Statement: This includes a review of physiological changes introduced in
fifth grade and a brief examination of psychological and social changes, including
mood swings, changing family and peer relationships, and increasing interest in romantic
relationships. Ways to cope with these changes are addressed, including
proper diet,
exercise, and talking with a trusted adult such as an adult family member, teacher, counselor,
or member of the clergy. The relationship among bodily changes, good personal hygiene and
positive interactions with others is emphasized.
Girls only review the use and proper disposal
of sanitary napkins and tampons.
6.2 (Gender Separate): The student will review the structures and functions of the
male and female reproductive systems and how these change during puberty.
Descriptive Statement: Instruction includes the structure and function of the reproductive
organs, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina in girls, and the
testicles, vasa deferensa, urethra, penis, and scrotum in boys.
6.5 (Gender Separate): The student will identify reasons for avoiding premarital
sexual intercourse.
Descriptive Statement: Instruction includes exploration of the physical, psychological,
social, academic, spiritual, and financial consequences of premarital sexual intercourse.
The benefits of sexual abstinence in supporting healthy adolescent development are
emphasized, and students review and practice using refusal skills in situations related to
adolescent development.

Straight Talk About Puberty for Girls: Marsh Media (2012) 20:00 minutes
Note: Companion media to boys’ title; will be shown to girls only
As an alternative to story-driven programs, this new title is streamlined and trimmed down to “just
the facts” – which makes it slightly shorter, and definitely crisper and more to the point. Girls in
this grade range will learn about
• The female reproductive system
• Hygiene and good grooming
• The dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs to growing bodies
• Emotional and physical changes of puberty
• Importance of exercise and good nutrition

Grade 8 Recommendations
Recommended Media for Grade 8 Human Growth and Development
Human Reproduction and Childbirth (edited for FCPS), Human Relations Media (2010), 21:00
minutes
Using animated graphics, this program clearly and vividly illustrates the biological functions of the
different parts of the male and female reproductive systems. It shows how millions of sperm race
through the uterus and into the fallopian tube where fertilization occurs, and subsequently how
the fertilized egg develops into an embryo. Program also describes the basics of menstruation.
Animated graphics vividly detail the different stages or trimesters of embryonic and fetal
development. The program also follows a young couple through the woman’s pregnancy, as both
husband and wife describe the importance of good nutrition, sleep, low stress, and avoidance of
alcohol and drugs. The process of birth is described as a young couple talks about their joy at
the birth of their baby daughter.
Recommended for grade 8 Human Growth and Development to address:
8.2 (Gender Separate): The student will examine and describe the process of
human reproduction.
Descriptive Statement: Topics include ovulation, fertilization, implantation, prenatal
development, and childbirth. Instruction includes the stages of labor and types of
deliveries. It is emphasized that the physical ability to conceive a child comes before
psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social readiness.
Recommended Print for Grade 8 Emotional and Social Health

6, 8, 11, 15, 18, 20, 25, 30, 35, 38, 41, 44, 50, 54, 61, and 62 for student use)

Sheridan Alexander moves to San Diego and her fifth foster home since kindergarten.
Her two goals are to graduate and exit the system without any more trouble. That is, until
she is assigned locker 572 and finds the abandoned journal of Ribbon Barber. The
journal pages reveal the endless insults and abuse flung at an innocent girl. "Sticks and
stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you.” Yeah, right. Words of hate
scar forever. Sheridan needs to find Ribbon and protect her before it is too late, even if it
means giving up her most stable home in years. Ribbon has a right to be left alone. But
can anyone ever be safe in the hardened halls of high school?
Recommended for grade 8 Emotional and Social Health to address:
8.4 The student will describe the symptoms of depression and identify clinical
depression as a leading factor in suicide.
Descriptive Statement: This includes the relationship between the changes of
adolescence and depression, the difference between feeling depressed and experiencing
clinical depression, the warning signs of depression and suicide, and sources of help.
