What is ERM and Why Do We Bother?
Managing E-Resources Today
Libraries use multiple, independent databases
They track:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Cost
Payments
Renewal dates
Access restrictions
Access methods
IP addresses allowed
Resource Links
•

•
ILL permissions
Copying permissions
Contracts/licenses
Management notes
Negotiation details
Holdings data
And more

What is ERM and Why Do We Bother?
Central database to hold information about eresources
• Resource record
– Resource name, URL, administrative info, resource
format, resource advisory, usage statistics
• License record
– Authentication method, number of concurrent users,
perpetual access, permitted & restricted usage
• Contact record
– Company name, contact name, address, phone, e-mail
• Coverage information
13
What is ERM?
ERM = Electronic Resources Management
ANU uses Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium ILS.
The ERM shown here is a module of that system.

Serials Solutions and ERM
A marriage made in heaven? (Well, sort of…)
– ERM is dependent on Serials Solutions for an
accurate record of entitlements
– Serials Solutions is our e-resource management
service for serials and ebooks

E-resources and ERM: It isn't just for
ejournals anymore
We subscribe to these 3
eresources. We have information
about each resource scattered in
Millennium bibs, orders, checkins,
pdf licenses, emails, etc…

E-books and Serials Solutions / ERM
Proposal for Subscription to Serials Solutions eBooks Module
3 May 2012
Executive Summary
This paper proposes that the ANU Library add the Serials Solution
eBook module. The cost for the eBooks MARC module is $**** USD
whether we import 20,000 Serials Solutions eBook MARC records or
200,000 Serials Solutions eBook MARC records. An analysis of
ebooks that we have purchased or subscribed to that are available via
Serials Solutions puts the number in our collection at over 64,592
ebooks. This same analysis shows that currently approximately 45,000
or 70% are not included in our Library catalogue and are therefore not
easily discoverable by ANU staff and students.

E-books and Serials Solutions / ERM
The ANU Library subscribed on 1 June!
The Serials Solutions monograph ebooks dataset (142,920 titles) had
to be split into three files for loading into the Millennium production
environment. The first file was loaded overnight; the next two files were
loaded overnight on the following two days .

Coverage Load: The Ultimate Mystery
just a creature designed to drive the Electronic
of the Universe? Or
Resources and Subscriptions Team mad?...
– Coverage load in catalogue happens once a
month
– There is a lag between changes in the SS Full
Text list on the Library Home Page and the
catalogue
– WebBridge links are dependent on the
coverage load
