INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT • Educate vendors on RE&F’s sustainability principles and Standards of Business Conduct. • Give priority to vendors with one or more of the following: strong CSR policy, active sustainability programs, ethical business policies, ownership by under-represented population. TRANSPARENCY • Measure, record and share information related to annual electric energy, fossil fuel and water consumption and related carbon footprint data for corporate owned facilities as well as for those leased facilities where measurement is practical. • Provide data and information in support of the One Report and Carbon Disclosure Report. • Design new construction and significant tenant improvement projects to LEED certifiable wherever possible and achieve LEED ratings on selected projects as proof points. HEALTHY WORKPLACE • Meet or exceed the local industry standards for good housekeeping, air quality, thermal comfort, acoustics, and lighting quality and provide daylight and views for work stations wherever possible. • Promote dining services with healthy, local and organic alternatives for staff and events. • Conduct and respond to Microsoft’s existing workplace satisfaction surveys on a regular basis. COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP • Promote alternative modes of transportation and support commute trip reduction for employees, vendors and partners. • Promote RE&F’s environmental sustainability principles through professional organizations and industry conferences. • Support employee engagement in volunteer sustainability activities for the local community. GOOD NEIGHBOR • Promote global employment policies to hire locally at a local fair wage for RE&F-related labor. • Support diversity spending in local geographies. • Introduce Microsoft’s standards for worker health and safety practices in construction and operation of facilities wherever possible. CARBON FOOTPRINT • Actively strive to reduce energy use through efficient facility design and operations, employee education and technology. • Encourage design teams to explore on-site energy generation & conservation opportunities such as solar, geo-thermal and others. • Develop strategic relationships with local municipalities & utilities to explore and leverage grant opportunities. • Actively work to reduce carbon footprint in support of the corporate commitment for carbon footprint reduction. WASTE REDUCTION • Give priority to procurement of materials that have one or more of the following environmental attributes: sustainably harvested, locally manufactured, high recycled content and minimal packaging. • Recycle construction and operation waste wherever the local infrastructure exists. Support the development of recycling infrastructure and hazmat disposal where it does not exist. • Compost food waste and landscaping materials wherever possible. WATER QUALITY Microsoft Confidential • Promote reduction of potable water use inside buildings and for landscaping through installation of low water use fixtures and native landscaping. • Promote design that maintains local hydrology and minimizes stormwater run-off and contamination. • Use organic landscaping techniques to minimize pesticide and herbicide use wherever possible.
