Initial Steps for Developing a North Dakota Practice-Based Research Network Meeting Notes October 29, 2013 10:00 – 11:00 AM CST Project Goal: Develop a North Dakota Practice-based Research Network. Group website: http://www.ndcenterfornursing.org/research-development/ Group Chair- Mary Wright 1. Introductions- Karen Robinson, Patricia Moulton, Kelly Buettner-Schmidt, Mary Wright, Julie Traynor 2. Status of list of additional of members: Karen emailed Donna Grandbois. Karen Rohr, Linda Scott, Becky McDaniels and Alicia Hauff. Karen Rohr, Linda Scott and Becky McDaniels are going to go to the website and look at it and think about it. Alicia is working on another ND Center for Nursing project. Karen will be seeing Kobe Schaffer on Saturday who is a NDSU graduate student and will see if she is interested. Patricia emailed Kelly Buettner-Schmidt who accepted and who was on the call today. Patricia also emailed Glenda Lindseth and she has agreed to join, but was unavailable for today’s call. Patricia hasn’t heard back from Altru, she will email again. 3. Review September meeting notes. http://www.ndcenterfornursing.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Research-Network-September-Meeting-Notes.docx no changes, approved. 4. Review Building the Clinical Bridge for Practice, Education and Researchhttp://www.ndcenterfornursing.org/wpcontent/uploads/2013/01/Building-the-Clinical-Bridge-for-Practice-Education-and-Research.pdfKaren has actually viewed the webinar. The presenters got most of their information from the Shirey 2011 article “Showcasing Differences between Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Practice and Research” Mary will check with AACN to see if we can access the webinar. 5. Review draft definitions document and determine next steps including dissemination- Which are we going to focus on in our research network?- Patricia http://www.ndcenterfornursing.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Research-Network-Definitions.docx Patricia indicated that she received quite a bit of information from Karen to put together this document including the “Showcasing Differences between Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Practice and Research” Patricia also did some literature searching and utilized the 2010 ANA Scope of Practice book. The definitions document compares quality improvement, evidence-based practice and nursing research across definitions, purposes, impact on practice, history, nursing standards of practice, nursing’s role, institutional review board, methods and examples of projects. Sanford spent quite a bit of time looking at the different definitions, we watched the Building the Clinical Bridge for Practice webinar to see if we are on target. They didn’t spend a lot of time talking about quality improvement. Which of the three should be the focus on our research network? How do we share this? We can use information from this document for the survey. We can also put it in the enewsletter. The quality improvement discussion is a missing link that people don’t draw a distinction between that and research. I get a lot of questions from students. 6. Review Research Network information Ideas- should we ask about some of these features on our survey?- Patricia http://www.ndcenterfornursing.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Research-Network-Ideas.docx Patricia reviewed the ideas document which included her take-aways when she looked at each of the research networks that are listed on our website. The networks are engaged in webinars, conferences, internships, research grants, sharing information about conferences and abstracts, mentoring, hosting online lessons and activities, joint studies, scholar and trainee awards, provide lists of expertise, promoting the scientific method etc. Patricia also talked to the Hawaii Center for Nursing where they have hosted an EBR internship for the last six years. They also offer faculty/staff nurse joint grant projects. There is a lot of wonderful ideas there. It is exciting to think about the possibilities. There is potential for any of these to happen. I would like to look at a couple of the models. Hawaii and the Iowa Model. San Antonio had one for a while too. I would like to visit with the people in Iowa about that. If they were starting over- what would they suggest we should do. It would be nice. I kind of would like to go back through the list and think about it and absorb it. Really exploring with how much their activities have been disseminated, how far are their reach. Iowa has a conference on Evidence based Practice on April 23, 24th. Mary will send link to Patricia. http://www.uihealthcare.org/otherservices.aspx?id=15221 Want to look at Evidence based practice ideas more closely. 7. Review Draft Survey and discuss method for collecting data- Patricia Draft survey link: http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e8fjmgdmhnbwm3w8/start?TEST_ONLY_RESPONSES_NOT_SAVED=t Survey link was not working as constant contact was down. Patricia will send out a link to the survey later today. Who to send out survey when we are happy with the draft? Send out to all of the universities- for all of the faculty and graduate students. Send to major hospitals. Can put in enewsletter. Group decided that we should send it out in January and have in January enewsletter. Will give the group more time to work on the survey and should have better responses by then. Could put definitions document in enewsletter and let them know that a survey is coming in January. Could send to the NDONE president to send to their members After the initial comments, Patricia will send out a second draft in time for review during our November meeting. Could also send it to the Sigma Theta Tau chapter contacts. 8. Set next meetings- when would the group like to meet? November, December, February, March, May? What times would work? November meeting can finalize the survey during that time. Can talk more about the IOWA model and try to invite them on the call. Can look at article from Journal of Education. Patricia will send out a meeting doodle for a Tuesday or Thursday for one hour blocks. Current Activity Plan Year/Annual Goal Identify current state of nursing research in ND. Activities Common definition draft document drafted. Comparison of research, quality improvement, evidence based practice. Patricia will finalize and put in enewsletter along with a summary about our research network. Disseminate document. Develop questions for a survey to determine involvement and resources for research. Would send to universities and research groups at health care systems. Possible questions: Resources needed (funding, personnel, mentoring, training on specific topics, statistician support, infrastructure, other ideas from other states). Collaborative partnership- if they have one, multi-site, disciplines and are they interested Determine what is the current state? is it this year, or back to other years. When was the study completed/analyzed? Who would be interested in your results? Where are you getting funding for your research (or is it in-kind)? Group will look at draft survey, provide feedback and look at second draft during November meeting. Collect survey by emailing to contacts at universities, health care facilities, organizations etc. Collect data in January. Analyze in early February Month Responsible Person(s) Patricia will compile the definitions document. Workgroup review during October meeting then talk about dissemination. October-November Workgroup suggest questions Activity Completion Status 25% 50% 75% 100% 25% 50% 75% 100% 25% 50% 75% 100% Patricia develop online survey October-December Patricia collect and analyze survey results January- February Determine next steps with results. Examine need for resources. Determine mechanism and infrastructure for setting up the network. Examine other programs/centers to see what resources/personnel they have for research networks or for increasing nursing research. List on website. Include question regarding needed resources in survey. Examine survey results to determine needed resources. Added to survey. Determine next steps for resources. Examine models such as Rural Health Research Gateway and other state research networks at other centers for nursing and other entities. Thoughts to keep in mind. What is the return on investment- is there are things in the infrastructure that will foster the exchange or bridge. Put out a mechanism and help people use it. What is our ultimate goal for developing this database. How will it help the practice of nursing in ND? Will they use our site? What would a repository of research in the Center for Nursing do? Need to articulate it. Inviting IOWA EBP Center to November meeting Determine next steps for setting up network. Should we host a researcher meeting?
