Business Letter
ELA5W4 The student consistently uses a writing
process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing.
The student
a. Plans and drafts independently and
resourcefully.
PLO: The students will complete the pre-writing
and drafting stage of the writing process, while
writing a formal business letter.
A business letter is a letter written in formal language,
usually used when writing from one business organization
to another, or for correspondence between such
organizations and their customers, clients and other
external parties. The overall style of letter will depend on
the relationship between the parties concerned.
Business letters (in the United
States) usually contain the
following information (in this
order):
•Date of writing
•Return address
•Recipient's address
•Salutation or Greeting
•Message (body of the letter)
•Closing
•Signature, printed name, and
position of sender
•Choose a topic.
•Considerer the function.
•Considering the audience.
•Consider the form.
•Decide on a graphic organizer.
•Model the pre-writing strategy.
•Do class collaboration of the pre-writing strategy.
•Have students complete their own graphic
organizer.

Job offer, complaint,
contract, confirmation,
and arrangements.

complete a blank
graphic organizer on
the smart board.

letter graphic organizer.
•Explain that the emphasis is on
content of writing.
•Explain to students how to skip lines
while drafting.
•Model your own draft to students.
•Write a class collaboration draft using
the class collaboration graphic
organizer.
•Have students use their pre-writing
strategy to develop their own draft.
•Do not spell words.
•Provide support and encouragement
while students write.
