Plans and drafts independently and resourcefully. PLO: The students will complete the pre-writing and drafting stage of the writing process, while writing a formal business letter. A business letter is a letter written in formal language, usually used when writing from one business organization to another, or for correspondence between such organizations and their customers, clients and other external parties. The overall style of letter will depend on the relationship between the parties concerned. Business letters (in the United States) usually contain the following information (in this order): •Date of writing •Return address •Recipient's address •Salutation or Greeting •Message (body of the letter) •Closing •Signature, printed name, and position of sender •Choose a topic. •Considerer the function. •Considering the audience. •Consider the form. •Decide on a graphic organizer. •Model the pre-writing strategy. •Do class collaboration of the pre-writing strategy. •Have students complete their own graphic organizer. Brainstorm The purpose for writing the business letter. Ex. Job offer, complaint, contract, confirmation, and arrangements. Pre-Writing Graphic Organizer For practice we will use the shared pen strategy. We will have the students complete a blank graphic organizer on the smart board. The student will create their on business letter graphic organizer. •Explain that the emphasis is on content of writing. •Explain to students how to skip lines while drafting. •Model your own draft to students. •Write a class collaboration draft using the class collaboration graphic organizer. •Have students use their pre-writing strategy to develop their own draft. •Do not spell words. •Provide support and encouragement while students write. Drafting Drafting Business Letter The structure of the business letter. Try to include as much information as you can on what you will discuss within the letter. Ex. The teacher will check to see if each student has developed a draft from their pre-writing graphic organizer onto their business letter template, before going onto the editing stage.
