DO NOW! HAPPY DECEMBER! 12/3/12 1. What does the first part of Cell Theory state? 2. The following sequence represents which characteristic of a living thing: fetus baby toddler child tween 3. Which protists are plant like? Which are animal like? What’s the difference? 4. Label the following as “L,” living or “NL,” non-living: virus, bacteria, water, hair, nails, skin, flower, sun, paper, potato, eye, fruit 5. Take out your homework (RAFT)!!! TODAY’S LEQ 3: HOW ARE PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS SIMILAR? HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT? By the end of this lesson, you should be able to… 1. Define the word “organelle” 2. List the functions of all eight organelles 3. Explain why plant cells have chloroplasts and a cell wall. Who has read/seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? What was unique about the factory? THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY EXPERIMENT Imagine that you are responsible for building a chocolate factory. The factory must take raw ingredients like cocoa, sugar, and milk, turn them into chocolate, and then ship them around the world. In your notes, draw a plan for your factory design. Things to consider… How are the raw ingredients going to get inside the factory? Who will decide how the factory is run? Where will the raw ingredients be mixed and packaged? How will the finished chocolate leave the factory? How will your factory get the energy it needs? Where will your workers mix and package the chocolate? OUR CELLS ARE LIKE A FACTORY! Reading Comprehension Article, Group Discussion, and Individual Questions (15 minutes) GROUP DISCUSSION—SHARE OUT! 1. 2. 3. 4. What are some ways that a cell is like a factory? Why is the term “organelle” an appropriate name for the structures inside a cell? What are some similarities that you noticed between plant and animal cells? What are some differences that you noticed between plant and animal cells? HAPPY WEDNESDAY!! 1. 2. 3. 12/5/2012 What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular organisms? Is a protist unicellular or multicellular? Describe how a protist would move if it has… A flagella b) Cilia c) A pseudopod a) 4. Please take out your homework (protist practice and children’s book) for collection. TODAY YOU WILL BE MAKING EDIBLE CELL MODELS OUT OF CANDY. IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE, YOU MUST HAVE… HOMEWORK & DO NOW COMPLETE NOTES TAKEN VOCABULARY: ORGANELLE the structures inside cells that perform specific jobs Means Latin “little organ” in KEY POINTS The two types of cells are eukaryotic and prokaryotic EU = DO have a nucleus; PRO = NO nucleus The two types of eukaryotic cells are PLANT and ANIMAL Cells are made up of different parts that allow the cell to do its job. WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Cell Membrane – surrounds the cell like a skin; allows certain things in and out. “cell skin” WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Nucleus– contains DNA, a chemical that provides the information a cell needs to grow and function. “Nerdy Nucleus” “knows everything” WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Mitochondria – makes energy for the cell; the powerhouse! “Mighty Mitochondria” WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Golgi Body – packages proteins WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Endoplasmic Reticulum-transports/delivers materials around the cell “Long word – long road” WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Ribosomes – makes proteins which help the cell do its job Give me “some” protein WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Cytoplasm – the fluid that fills a cell “sticky cytoplasm” WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Vacuole – stores materials “vacuole vase” WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Lysosome – digests food “Loves to eat” WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Cell wall – gives a PLANT its shape “a water balloon in a box” WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CELL? Chloroplast – turns sunlight into energy in a plant “Green guys” TODAY YOU WILL MAKE INCREDIBLE EDIBLE CELLS ! No whining, groaning, moaning or complaining about your lab groups. You MUST complete your data table before you can get your candy. Your model must be complete and photographed (by Ms. K) before you can enjoy it. WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!! IT’S FLU SEASON! Please be responsible with the materials – do not take more than you need. Remember, I have 174 other students that need to do this. CREATING SIMILES BETWEEN ORGANELLES AND PARTS OF A FACTORY. ? A COMPARISON using LIKE or AS The__________ is (Part of a like the ______ Factory) because they both... (ORGANELLE)
