Estonia and Morocco in the Fall of 2012
Cross Cultural
Psychology
Program dates: 3rd week of August – 3rd week of December (return to the US no later than 12/24/12)
Credits: 4.5 Beloit College units (18 credit hours)
Pre-requisites: A course in Introductory Psychology required; Course(s) in Statistics and Research Methods preferred
Housing: With host families in both locations
Costs: Beloit College tuition, room and board, and a $50 overseas administrative fee. Students pay for their
transportation to both sites and for their costs in the mid-term break between countries.
Open to all majors! No language requirement!
COURSES:
Estonian Society and Identity (.75 units/3 hours)
Cross-Cultural Psychology (1 unit/4 hours)
We examine universal and culture-specific aspects of
psychological phenomena including the self and
personality, mental processes (e.g., perception and
memory), communication (e.g., gestures), social behavior
(e.g., helping and conformity), emotional experiences
(e.g., love and depression), and sexual behavior. You will
gain a better understanding of other cultures and your
own culture. You will also learn how to interact more
effectively with persons who are culturally different from
you. (Meets 4 hours each week throughout the program.)
In this course, you will come to know what most Estonians know about
the land called Estonia, the peoples of Estonia, Estonia’s recent history,
its geography and climate, society and politics, customs and folklore,
food, and popular music and films. Learning occurs through a
combination of assigned readings, guest speakers, independent
projects, and excursions to culturally-important sites in Estonia.
Estonian Language and Culture (.75 units/3 hours)
Students learn to speak and write basic Estonian language. Lessons are
designed to teach cross-cultural understanding through basic
communication skills and knowledge of cultural rules. Students learn
to shop, ask for directions, buy bus and theater tickets, read recipes,
order food at restaurants, and talk about themselves and their family.
Moroccan Women, Arts and Literature(.75 units/3 hours)
Advanced Research Seminar (.5 units/2 hours)
Advanced experience in designing, conducting, and
reporting a study, with special attention to cross-cultural
research methods. (Meets 2 hours each week throughout
the program.)
Students learn first-hand about Islamic arts and architecture in the
medina. They also read Moroccan literature in translation. Special
attention is given to the role of women in Morocco and to the impact
of Islam on daily life.
Moroccan Language and Culture (.75 units/3 hours)
This course introduces students to spoken Moroccan Arabic. Lessons
are designed to teach cross-cultural understanding through basic
communication skills and knowledge of cultural rules. Students learn
traditional greetings, how to shop and bargain, how to order food at
restaurants, and how to talk about themselves and their family.
