REMEMBRANCE
SUNDAY TODAY
In company with millions throughout the world, we remember this Sunday
all those who died fighting for our country and all who suffer as a result of
war. To accommodate our special Acts of Remembrance, the 9.30 Sung
Eucharist is slightly shortened and no refreshments are served between this
service and Matins.
This year we host our Royal Borough’s Kensington Civic Act of
Remembrance and welcome our Mayor Cllr Robert Freeman, our
MP Victoria Borwick, our MEP Dr Charles Tannock and Lady
Arnold the Representative Deputy Lieutenant, units of our military
and uniformed organisations and community representatives.
We gather outside at the War Memorial at 10.50 for the
ACT OF REMEMBRANCE.
Many families stay on after the 9.30 Eucharist to witness this Act
even though they don’t go on to the Service
Then we process inside the church for the solemn SERVICE OF
REMEMBRANCE, which starts at about 11.15am. Throughout
our community and our society there is a deepening sense of our
debt to those who bear arms on behalf of our country, and of the
effects of war on combatants and non-combatants alike. Join us to
honour those who lay down their lives for our country, and to pray
for all the victims of war. Many of the families from the 9.30
service have been coming to the Act of Remembrance then going
home: that is perfectly proper and acceptable.
Poppies are still on sale in church throughout today.
REMEMBRANCE DAY itself is this Wednesday, the anniversary of the
signing of the Armistice at the end of the First World War, at the 11th hour
of the 11th day of the 11th month. All are welcomed to join us in our short
act of Remembrance at the War Memorial. Be in place by 10.55am.
Hot off the press! Don’t leave the church without your copy!
KENSINGTON PAROCHIAL NEWS

THIS TUESDAY – AUTUMN QUIET DAY
A TIME FOR REMEMBRANCE
TUESDAY (not the usual Wednesday) 10th November,
St Mary’s Convent, Chiswick, 9.30-3.00. The times mean you could drop
children at school and collect them afterwards. There’s a sequence of
addresses, silence, Eucharist and refreshment in the peaceful surroundings
of St Mary’s – so close and yet so far away! We ask all who can manage it to
make a donation towards expenses of £10ish. To book your place email
jenny.welsh@stmaryabbotschurch.org or sign the list in church.
OUR AUTUMN STUDY COURSE CONTINUES THIS TUESDAY
LUKE
Three Songs for the Kingdom
7.30pm Tue 10 & Wed 18 November
Teaching; Discussion; Learning; Fellowship
Did you know that Luke is the Gospel of Song? On Advent Sunday we
start the Year of Luke, and in preparation we offer this study course,
looking at three of the most familiar passages of scripture – familiar but
with powerful messages about Jesus and how we are to live.
Even if you missed last week you’d be most welcome.
Each session includes a light supper.
To sign up contact jenny.welsh@stmaryabbotschurch.org
ST. MARY ABBOTS' BOOK CLUB meets this Wednesday 11th November
at 2.30pm (NOT Thursday as usual) to discuss Marcus Zusak’s "The Book
Thief", and enjoy a friendly and delicious tea. New members welcome:
please contact Anita Quinn for details: Ann_Q@Hotmail.co.uk
Thanks to all who worked so hard to make Friday’s BONFIRE &
FIREWORKS PARTY so successful: the Gang of Pyromaniacs under the
baton of David Wilkinson & the Catering Team led by Alison Steel – but
above all for ADAM NORTON’S tireless work. We are confident that by
about April 2016 the Vicarage garden will have more or less recovered.
WILL YOU VOLUNTEER? WINTER NIGHT SHELTER

ADVENT CALENDARS Do YOU find it impossible to find the right
calendar for your children, godchildren, grandchildren? One that realises
that Advent is about preparing for a Christian festival, not just an excuse to
cram in four weeks’ worth of chocolate? We’ve some for sale - £4.00 each!
WILL YOU OPEN YOUR DOOR TO JESUS FOR A NIGHT?
On Advent Sunday our small Crib start its journey
around the Parish, returning to our church on
Christmas Eve. The Advent Crib encourages us all
to give a home to the Holy Family, symbolising our
need to make room in our lives for the Advent
coming of Jesus. We suggest prayers to say on its
arrival and candles to light beside the figures. It’s a
lovely way for everyone, young and old
to engage with the Christmas story and also a great way to offer hospitality to
people in the congregation whom you may not know.

HOW YOU CAN HELP VICTIMS OF THE
INTERNATIONAL REFUGEE CRISIS
We have two immediate local church responses:
Can you – or you and your family or a friend or two – put
together a box of necessities for refugee mothers and babies?
As well as the materials there’s a special note included in the box,
to show the recipients that the gift is sent with love and prayer.
We have full details of what should go into these boxes and how
they can be collected & delivered – pick up a leaflet, and talk to our
St Mary Abbots co-ordinator Marie-Christine Nibagwire saferefuge@hotmail.co.uk
The deadline for Collection has been extended to 20th November
Secondly – a 5k SPONSORED RUN in Hyde Park on November 14

ST MARY ABBOTS APPEAL NEWS
From KAREN BRYANT, our Head of Fundraising:
We’ve had to make unexpected repairs to the 2 crosses on the south transept
crosses, replacing them with replicas carved by hand to the original designs. We
are (depending on the vicissitudes of the Autumn weather) just a few weeks away
from being free of scaffolding and we’re making plans to celebrate. We now have a
collection of the original slates, and other interesting materials from the church
building, which are being made into gift items. These will help us raise muchneeded funds for the next phase.
