INSIDE OUT: MENTAL HEALTH FORUM What’s the Problem? As with many other college campuses around the nation, William and Mary has a major problem with the mental health of our students. With the academic rigor of our school and the social pressures that go along with college many students found the resources available at William and Mary to be lacking. This was made apparent by a sit-in that protest held in front of the Wren building by a large contingent of students. RHA’s Mission: To distill the FEAR! The Mental Health Forum took place on October 29th at 7 PM, in Tidewater Auditorium. It was a resource, provided by RHA for students of the college to get to know more about mental health problems as well as the resources William and Mary does offer for their students. This event was free to students and cost nothing out of the RHA budget. The Big Event! At the event, a panel of widely respected mental health professionals from the William and Mary Counseling Center answered questions from students. Panelists: Thomas Le is a junior double majoring in Psychology and English. He is the President of the Mental Health branch of Health Outreach Peer Educators and a member of the Counseling Center Student Advisory Board. Dr. Chris Conway: The assistant Assistant Professor in the Psychology department. His research examines anxiety and depressive disorders, and he teaches courses at W&M related to abnormal psychology. Rachel Delbos: Instructor in mindfulness meditation and yoga at the college through the counseling center Carina Sudarsky-Gleiser: The director of training at the W&M Counseling Center. She got her Ph.D in counseling Psychology from Ohio State University and has worked in the counseling center for 18 years. How did They feel? Overall, the mental health forum was a success. There were about 70 people in attendance an many thought provoking questions were brought up by members of the audience. Overall, the mental health forum made those in attendance aware of the problems that we have on campus as well as the next steps on working with the administration to solve those problems.
