• In order to help people do work by changing the amount of force needed, we use what are called simple machines.
• A simple machine changes a force and lets people use less force to move things.

Simple machines allow us to use less force by doing the following:
1. Changing the direction of the force
2. Making the distance the force is used longer.

The 6 simple machines we will learn about included …
Inclined plane Wedge Screw
Lever Wheel & Axle
Pulley
• Made up of a slanted surface
• Makes work easier by making the distance that force is being used longer
• Rather than lifting a heavy box up into the back of a truck, if you slide it up the ramp
(over a longer distance), you use less force.
• Example: ramp, stairs, slide

• Made up of 2 inclined planes put together to make a V shaped object.
• Wedges change the direction of the force by making the force go outward instead of downward.
• It helps split or cut objects apart.
• Examples: knives, axes, chisel

• Made up of an inclined plane that is wrapped around a post.
• Screws change the direction of the force by making a turning force that is weak stronger by making it a downward force.
• The force is spread out over numerous turns of a screw.
• Examples: screw, jar lid

• Made up of an stiff or straight bar that moves around a fixed point
• The fixed point is called the fulcrum.
• Fulcrums are usually placed at one end of the lever to make that end longer than the other end.
• Examples: seesaws, can openers

• Made up of an axis that 2 cylinders turn on
• Small force must be used to move the small cylinder which in turn moves the axle using a large force
• Examples: faucet, car wheels

• Made up of a stationary or fixed wheel and a rope that is fitted around it
• Pulleys either change the direction of a force or the force that is used on them increases
• When you pull downward on one end of the rope, the wheel turns which makes the rope change direction (downward pull rope goes upward)
• Examples: flag pole, elevator, window blinds
