Newell seconded.
MaryJo Grenfell was the representative from the Music Department.
Discussion: Representative of the CS subcommittee offered that revisions in response to meeting
CS criteria were ‘fantastic’. The philosophy for the Music department offerings for the core was to
offer those courses that have been taken by the general student body in the past. Most were 100level free elective in the past, not DI, and as such have supplied more offerings for the new core.
This includes past courses that have come off of flowsheets, and should see renewed increase in
enrollment as part of the new Gen Ed offering.
With no changes, the vote to approve the Music Department packet 14:333-14:347 was
unanimous.
E. ART + DESIGN DEPARTMENT (2/7/14) (CRS B, Liz D.C., 2/24/14)
ART 155 Printmaking--Forms of Expression (CEA)
14:356
Elizabeth Duclos-Orsello made a motion to approve the Art + Design Department proposal 14:356;
Anne Noonan seconded.
Mary Melilli was the representative from the Art + Design Department.
Discussion: Updated course number and title was verified and entered into the documentation.
Course descriptions were verified as containing reference to the major (Art), rather than the name of
the department (Art + Design). Registrar recognized point of contention since department name
change. For future submission, course descriptions should continue to refer to the major, not the
department.
With discussion and changes as noted, the vote to approve the Art + Design Department proposal
14:356 was unanimous
Steve Dion, representative from SMS, was not yet in attendance for the next agenda item.
Megan Miller made the motion to change the order of agenda to proceed to agenda item I: Motion
seconded and approved.

Elizabeth Coughlin made a motion to approve the Theatre and Speech Communication
Department packet 14:149-14:160, 14:230, 14:266 and 14:294; Anne Noonan seconded.
Bill Cunningham was the representative from the Theatre and Speech Communication Department.
Discussion: The registrar commented that there were historical pre-requisites of SPC in some
courses, and if they still retained these prerequisites in the course description, the course could not
then be appropriate for OC certification. A friendly amendment was made for departmental and
CRS review of all courses for removal of prerequisites from relevant course descriptions.
The representative of the department shared that the philosophy of department submission to Gen.
Ed certification focused on those courses most broadly available, at lower levels. Submissions of
other courses taken regularly by minors were inappropriate due to prerequisite issues.
With little discussion and as amended, the vote to approve the Theatre and Speech
Communication Department packet 14:149-14:160, 14:230, 14:266 and 14:294 was unanimous
The agenda was resumed at item F
F. SPORT AND MOVEMENT SCIENCE DEPARTMENT (1/31/14) (CRS D, Sam A. 2/24/14)
SMS572-Walt Disney World College Program-New Course
14:348
SMS195-Women’s Health in Today’s World-Change in Course (PGR)
14:350
SMS196-Men’s Health Seminar-Change in Course (PGR)
14:351
SMS360-Stress and Health Empowerment-Change in Course (PGR)
14:353
Sami Ansari made a motion to approve the Sport and Movement Science Department packet
14:348, 14:350, 14:351, 14:353; Steve Matchek seconded.
Steve Dion was the representative from the Sport and Movement Science Department.
Discussion focused on the spirit of the SMS572-Walt Disney World College Program-New Course
offering. This course is being put forward as new course to allow 12 credit transcript placements for
the Disney Semester. The registrar offered that this internship has long been awarded credit for the
students under a different course; SMS 570A Recreation Management Internship, though the
representative from SMS offered that the majority of students getting this credit are not SMS majors.
The appearance of the corporate name in the title requires, and has been granted permission for use.
It was recognized by the committee that internships are intended to provide off campus disciplinespecific training that is coordinated or facilitated by appropriate faculty. Documentation and
assessment of said internships has markedly improved at SSU in the recent past, and different
departments seek to deal with these credits in different ways. How does overt corporate placement
in a course title affect the student’s experience and faculty involvement? Approval of this course at
this time would set a precedent moving forward for other corporate involvement in curriculum, and
it was offered that the implications beyond this specific proposal need to be explored. Because there
would be no harm to students already involved in this activity, it was moved to table this proposal
pending solicitation of guidance from other contract committees on the role of direct corporate
sponsorship or involvement in curriculum.
Chris Mauriello made the motion to table 14:348 pending additional guidance from Academic
Policies and All University regarding what could be perceived as corporate sponsorship of a
course. Elizabeth Duclos-Orsello seconded, 17 voted for, 1 opposed.
Further discussion centered on SMS195-Women’s Health in Today’s World-Change in Course
(PGR). The course description does not accurately represent the topics/outcomes described in the
CID. Request addition of a first sentence; “This course examines the physical, mental, emotional,
spiritual, and global health of women.”
With noted changes, the vote to approve the Sport and Movement Science Department packet,
14:350, 14:351, 14:353 was unanimous
There being no other business, Chris Mauriello moved to adjourn the meeting; Anne Noonan
seconded. The vote to adjourn was unanimous, and the committee adjourned at 4:33 PM.
