Poetry Assignment:

Read your assigned poem. o

Simple, step-by-step process for poetry analysis

Read poem; read it again; read it aloud; probably you should read it again

Number the lines

Define vocabulary

Provide a summary of the poem, with the main idea / explain the theme of the poem. o What’s the subject matter of the poem? (love, death, life, war, nature, relationships, etc.) o Use the subject matter to write a one sentence statement about humanity. What does this poem tell the reader about humanity? o What point(s) does the poem convey about that subject? o Cite at least 3 lines to support your chosen theme.

Cite at least 3 literary terms in the poem. o Give the line references. o Explain how each literary term impacts/enhances/emphasizes the theme.

Give information on the author and the time period. o Explain the significance this information has to understanding your theme.

Each section needs to be provided in writing, as well as shared with the class.

You will be working in groups of three, but this is an individual assignment. I will need to know which criteria sections for which you are taking responsibility.

You can choose your groups or I will assign. AGAIN, this is an individually graded assignment.

Take notes on each of the presentations – ALL poems will be on the test.
